Take that, Condi!
Former foreign affairs minister Llyod Axworthy posted an open letter to Coni in an issue of last weeks Winnipeg Free Press:
Some highlights:
I know it seems improbable to your divinely guided master in the White House that mere mortals might disagree with participating in a missile-defence system that has failed in its last three tests, even though the tests themselves were carefully rigged to show results.
Sure, that doesn't match the gargantuan, multi-billion-dollar deficits that your government blithely runs up fighting a "liberation war" in Iraq, laying out more than half of all weapons expenditures in the world, and giving massive tax breaks to the top one per cent of your population while cutting food programs for poor children. Just chalk that up to a different sense of priorities about what a national government's role should be when there isn't a prevailing mood of manifest destiny.
Basically, he says that certain members of the American Government need to grow the hell up and realize that we aren't America Lite. I think Axworthy hits the nail on the head, and pretty much says what I have always thought about Canada/US relations. Less bully and more neighbour. What do the rest of you thing?
I like it. Rational and reasonable.
Here is the whole thing.
The Letter

As long as Divine Bully in Chief is in the White House, Canada should not play too nice.

Re: Take that, Condi!
Two thoughts:
1. He certainly was not pulling any punches.
2. Axworthy, though he is now "out of politics" is a Liberal Party lackey through and through. He and the Prime Minister are, if not buddies, closely linked with vested interest in each other and the words that come from each others' mouths. In fact, I would not be surprised if one day we see Axworthy running for PM. Although both Axworthy and Martin will deny it 'til the cows come home, you can bet that that letter was vetted through the PM's office before it made it to press.
That is, Axworthy is doing his job as Martin's bulldog, and Bush and KindaSleezy are well aware of that fact.

This guy just says what many Americans are in denial about and what other countries are afraid to say. This guy has my respect for having the balls to tell it as it is. God bless him!

I dont get it.
I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you. That amuses me.

I suppose "Master" can only be used in a sense relating to slavery.
Lets see what the OED has to say about the word:
A person or thing having control or authority.
A person (predominantly, a man) having authority, direction or control over the action of another or others; a director, leader, chief, commander; a ruler, governor.
A person who has the power to control, use, or dispose of something at will. Usu. with of.
In extended use: something (more or less personified) with power over a person or people.
There are a few definitions that seem to fit Dubya. And since the man himself says that he hears from The Big Sky Fairy, divinely guided doesnt sound too far off the mark.
Ouch. Truth is painful

Actually, and I could be wrong on this, I think Axworthy was a member of the Chretien faction, which is about as chummy with the Martinites as the most rabid Albertan conservatives.
He's actually an interesting guy, and I've heard tell that Martin wishes he'd shut the hell up, because this sincerity of his beliefs stands in sharp contrast to Canada's actual foreign policy, which is not nearly so touchy-feely as most Canadians like to think.
On the other hand, was he in the cabinet during the Rwandan genocide? Was he one of the pukeholes who refused to call it a genocide? I can't remember.
