iBook go boom
This is the story in a nut shell. I have an iBook G3 800MHz dual USB. I was using it on battery power and once the iBook got to 50% battery power it died. This has been happening recently and I realized the battery is dying and as I have a new computer on order, didn't worry too much about it. This time, however, when I plugged it back in to the power supply, the screen, when it came on, was all jumpy and had vertical and horizontal lines flashing everywhere. I then tried to quite the running programs and the mouse icon disappeared. Then I tried to restart and it would not respond to any keyboard commands. I then held the power button down until the machine shut down. I tried to restart but during startup the round timer dealy stopped going (during a grey screen) the flickering started up again. I shut the machine down again using the power button and shut the lid. I let it sit for 10 minutes and started up again and all was well, although the startup time was prolonged. Any idea what this could be? My first thought was the logic board, which has been replaced once already. I am going to try to perform a hardware test from the disk to test all the components and will post any results. I am just doing a backup right now.

Re: iBook go boom
OK, during the hardware test the screen acted up and then froze. I had the foresite to get my digital camera and put it on movie mode and video the incident so that it would be recorded for future purposes and diagnostic assistance. At any rate, after having the computer sit for over 4 hours it was finally able to boot and I am now using it but expect it to go out soon. I also noticed that during that 4 hours the battery has only charged to 41%.

It's the logic board, definitely. You have two weeks to get it repaired for free under Apple's extended logic board repair program. Contact Apple support or take it to an Apple store ASAP.

Since he has an 800 MHz iBook, which was first introduced April 22nd, 2003, he has coverage under the logic board repair program until April 22nd, 2006, at least.

Re: iBook go boom
Back in the saddle. I have the iBook in for repair and I have news. I have a NEW MAC MINI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is no emoticon that expresses my joy. I went to get the iBook repaired and the sales person there had a Mac Mini he just got in. It was somewhat different than the one I ordered but it was better. Since mine was delayed until near the end of the month, he sold me this one. And he only got one in! I was in he right place at the right time. So I have a new Mac Mini and could not be happier. It was definitely the logic board on the ibook and I am getting that fixed. I have a new monitor which shows no signs of the "dark screen" issue. I bought an Apple keyboard and will be getting a few extras later in the year. So, I'm happy.

No way! That's going in the living room to be my music and kid's machine. I have a ice set of speakers just waiting for use.
This is sooooo cool. It's so fast compared to the iBook.
