Can't delete locked file.
I have a locked file I want to delete, but in info I can't uncheck the "locked" checkbox. It's grayed out or something.

Re: Can't delete locked file.
in get info, under ownership and permissions, does it say "You can Read & Write".
that's what it should say. if it doesn't then you need to give yourself write permissions to change the "locked" check box.

uh yeah, thanks bubba. I can't move it to the trash. it's locked.
for anyone not resorting to sarcasm: apparently I can't lock or unlock any files on my HD. Is there a setting somewhere that would prevent me from doing this?

Re: Can't delete locked file.
Is it only this one file?
In the Get Info window, check to see that you are the owner. You will have read and write permissions as an admin user or on a file that has you as the Group, but still not have permission to lock/unlock the file if it is not owned by you.

Re: Can't delete locked file.
I am the owner. But I found the bigger picture: I can't lock or unlock ANY file or folder on my entire hard drive. Anything I get info for shows the "locked" checkbox grayed out so I can't change it. It's like that with everything.

Re: Can't delete locked file.
Try running Disk Utility and try repairing permissions?

Re: Can't delete locked file.
yeah I did that already. Several times. It's not a permissions problem. I'm starting to think that this isn't fixable.

#1. I wasn't being sarcastic.
#2. What type of file is it?

Re: Can't delete locked file.
Perhaps it is loading something upon startup which is why you cannot delete it--you cannot delete a running program.
Try checking Startup Items in Accounts under System Preferences. If there is anything related to ViaVoice there, then delete that, restart, then try deleting this program.

Re: Can't delete locked file.
nah I haven't installed viavoice. I was holding off for a while. That being said, it can't have anything to do with the program running. Especially since it's a global problem and not isolated to this file.

Re: Can't delete locked file.
Did the installer come on a CD? If "yes" try popping the CD in and then trashing the little bastard...

no it's a download. I really think I can't be helped. Like I said, it's a global problem, not just this file.
