How to get a Minolta 1350W printer working on a mac...?

I scored a Minolta 1350W laser printer for $100 CDN at a boxing day sale a few weeks ago, and unfortunately it does not come with any mac drivers at all.  However, some enterprising linux hackers have managed to get it to work on their boxes, so I was wondering if I could also get it going on my Mac.

I can get PPD files for this printer, which I understand are one of many bits of code required to get this thing running.  I guess I also need to install gimp or CUPS or whatever.

So...  how do I get this thing running on my Mac?

you might be able to get it to work as a generic postscript printer. I seem to remember seeing a driver for that in OS X

and if all else fails try configuring it as a HP Laserjet 4 I've had good results with getting Linux to work with newer Laser Printers by using that driver.

Another option is to get a cheap used PC ($20 or so) and run it as a print server.  I am pretty sure that Mac OS X can print to a printer on a windows network.  Not the cheapest solution, but it should work.

yup that's an option too, but I sure as heck wouldn't run windows on it.  I'd load the system up with linux and configure the system to share the printer using samba. No viruses, No spyware, and best of all NO WINDOWS!! wink

Well, my wife has a PC running XP, so I could hook up the Milolta to her computer and have it share the printer.  However, don't I still need a driver on my side for this to work?

This printer does NOT have postscript capabilities...

Did you try Gimp-Print? There may not be a driver specifically for that printer but maybe there's one that will work. I use the HP Laser Jet PCL driver with my Samsung printer.
