Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Hey guys...you all seem to know a lot about processors and such. Here's what's up.

I have a rather nice single-processor 800 MHz Quicksilver G4. I came across a dual 1GHz G4 processor that had been pulled from another Quicksilver. It's Apple branded, but doesn't want to work.

When I put it in (and use the proper heatsink) Mac OS X refuses to boot -- it goes to the gray screen with the Apple and then freezes. The little spinny-wheel goes for about 30-45 seconds and then the whole system hangs. With OS 9.2 I can use the card. I was able to boot from the CD, wipe a hard drive, and install and play with 9.2 using this dual 1 GHz G4.

Seems like OS X isn't as tolerant of the processor. I've tried booting from the 10.3 installer CD, and that doesn't work. Am I up the creek without a paddle? Putting in the single 800 fixes everything and it all runs fine. Ideas??

Thanks!

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Hit Cuda or zapped PRAM right?

It is a similar CPU of the 745x line. Could be something to do with the firmware. Trying to think of any possible reason for these problems but this isn't a CPU i've messed with so i'm really not sure here. But OS9 is more tolerable of changes like this so thats not a surprise to me. I know theres a few others on here that are more familiar with the 745x series CPUs so i'll leave this in their hands.

Agreed. Firmware.
Hit the CUDA button ( next to the battery ) hold it for about thirty seconds, do a dance for the hacking tikki-gods ( j/k wink ), then reboot.

If that doesn't fix it, I'm not sure what will.

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Well I'll try doing that 30-sec. PRAM zap later today -- I have only been doing it for about 10 seconds, so perhaps that's my problem. If it's a firmware issue, then what? Can I not use it or do I have to find a patch?

Thanks!

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Do you already have the latest firmware update for your machine?

I'm not sure... how would I check? I'm in 10.3.7.

The best way to handle the issue of firmware, for your situation, is likely to go to Apple's website, download the latest updater for your Quicksilver, then run the updater with the dual processor daughter card installed.

You can use software to check the firmware on your machine, but without knowing what's the latest, which I don't, the best thing to do is just install the latest.

Chances are good that it won't hurt anything if it doesn't work.

What is most likely, in the case that it doesn't work, is that you'll be in the same situation you are currently in.

that'll be a neat trick, since his machine won't boot with it.

Don't be a smartass until you have actually read the post.

It boots in OS 9:

Thank you, now go back to Unplugged.

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Pissing contest now out of the way, I just took a gander on Apple's site, and there's no firmware update currently available for the Quicksilver.

Maybe we can come up with some other solution?

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Som versions of Linux need to be recompiled to use two CPUs - a quickie-archive and install of OS X might just do the trick.

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

I can't see how that would be the problem. I've swapped between single and dual processor cards when installing 3rd party processor upgrades and never have I had a problem, in any flavor of OS X.

But, ya never know...

OS X is generic. Completely.

Re: Dual 1 GHz Quicksilver?

Yep... ironhawk is correct. No firmware updates available. I'd try reinstalling X, but even the installer CD won't boot. It's just so odd that anything 9 based will work, and Panther won't. Hmm... perhaps I should try Jaguar? Just the boot CD to see if that does anything?
