Archive and Install?

For the first time, I have had to re-install OS X on a computer, now I am wondering what (if anything) I need to do with the previous system folder?  I would like to delete it, as I need the room, but is there anything I need to take out of it first?

Re: Archive and Install?

Things that come to mind are fonts, screensavers, preference panels, any other system modifications that you've made but haven't re-installed on the new system.

Re: Archive and Install?

Only if you want some files that you had pre-archive and install (ie. your personal files).

Re: Archive and Install?

Anything you installed a system level that you want will be in the previous library folder.  What I mean is, anything installed on a root (i.e. VITAL to the system) level is put in the /System/Library folder, anything installed on a per user basis is installed in the ~/Library folder.  Anything that's not vital to the OS, and not installed per user (i.e. available to all users) is installed in you /Library folder.  Such things include fonts, screen savers, quicktime codecs, user made frameworks, web server files, etc.

Really, you can just trash the previous system folder, as you won't be trashing anything vital.

Re: Archive and Install?

Having done many reinstalls, I have learned that as long as you are careful with what you install, (I only Install for This User rather than all users since I am one person) I only need to backup my Users folder and my Applications folder.

If you WANT, you can go into your Library (The main one, not the User Library) and see if there's anything you really want. Usually, only certain things save preferences there and it's rarely needed to be saved. If you DID install something for all users, backup their PrefsPanes. Other than that, really, all you need is Users and Applications. Anything that does get broken can just be reinstalled.

Re: Archive and Install?

I have a question, related to this. I thave just done the Archive and Install on my Jag. After getting everything sorted back out, the system won't let me delete the Previous System Folder. I changed the ownership from root to me and instead of getting the "This folder is owned by root" message it will now just say that you can't delete this.

Any easy ways to do this?

Re: Archive and Install?

sudo rm -rf
or
hold down option while you delete

the second choice is easier, but less likely to work
