Mp3 to AIFF Question

Hello All,
I have about 1.5 gigs worth of mp3 files in iTunes and they are starting to take up to much space. I want to burn them onto cd but as AIFF files instead. Is there anyway to convert Mp3s in AIFF files? And if so what is the best way to go about doing it. Thank you in advance:)

Indy

p.s. I want them as AIFF files so I can play them in any cd player.

Re: Mp3 to AIFF Question

I believe you highlight the songs you want in iTunes then go to Advanced then click on convert selection to AIFF.

By default iTunes burns your MP3s to audio CD format. You can tell it to burn audio _or_ MP3 from Preferences --> Burning. I actually have an MP2 (broadcast format) digital recorder and iTunes amazingly converts them automatically as specified.

First of all, when you burn AIFFs to a music CD, you aren't actually burning the AIFF files onto the CD.  You're burning the actual audio data.  However, uncompressed AIFFs (at the proper frequency and bit depth) are, I believe, bit-for-bit identical to what's being recorded onto the CD.  That's why some software requires your audio files to be in AIFF format - no conversions necessary.

However, you don't need to convert 1.5GB of mp3s into AIFFs.  For one, they'll take up probably around 15 gigs of your hard disk, depending on the bit rate of your mp3s.  Secondly, as Gandolf pointed out, iTunes will burn audio CDs that play in CD players for you by converting your mp3s "on-the-fly" -- as it's recording them to the CD-R.  Again, like Galdalf said, go to the menu iTunes > Preferences..., click the Burning icon, and choose Disc Format: Audio CD.  You may or may not want a gap between the songs, depending on your music.

Finally, just so you know, most CD players won't play AIFFs burned onto a data CD-R.

[Warning: no guarantees are made as to the validity of this information.  It's merely been gleaned from my personal experiences.]

Why don't you have them on CD to begin with? Been ripping a lot of tapes and records?

I would suggest we just not get into that. wink But since you brought it up, a lot of people like to make "Mix" CDs. This guy isn't a http://members.cox.net/registered_user/maxes/pirate.gif just because he wants to burn CDs.

This is wrong.  Audio files on a CD are, in fact, AIFF files, but they are hidden files, the ".CDA" file you see when you look at the CD contents is just a pointer, and contains no audio data.

It's not actually a .AIFF file, though!
While an uncompressed AIFF has the same audio data as the CD track, it's not the same file.
AIFF used to stand for Apple Interchange File Format, IIRC, but was change to Audio when more people started using it.
