Of course, Longhorn is not nearly as far along as Tiger so it's not technically fair to compare something that's 1.5 years+ from release to something coming out in less than a month.

Isn't longhorn based on a proprietary UNIX version?

.Net is just their technology for creating user applications.
The NT kernel is very similar to VMS, not UNIX.

'My Recent Documents' sure look they'll take a long time to find...

Unless you're specifically showing some fancy transparency effect, gif is far superior to jpeg for screenshots.

Though I guess he could use png, but that would make them smurfing huge.

The only way jpeg files are smaller on computer screen caps is when the compression is overly noticeable.

A few things I noticed: the sidebar is huge, and so I'd want to hide it a lot. However, the toggle button is on the COMPLETELY OPPOSITE corner of the screen! And "Plex" looks like it was designed by a two year old on crack who they  sat in front of a computer (which he'd never seen before) with Paint running and said "Make us a style, dammit!"

I don't care if Longhorn (i'll hold back male anatomy jokes) is not done yet, WinXP looks like crap, and although it has more color then OS 9, it's still not at a point where every pixel is in the right spot.

A global menu bar at the top is so much faster to use then menus on windows.  (infinite velocity upwards yields faster results blah blah)

I tried talking to some PC users at my school about Longhorny, and they didn't even know anything about it.  EVERY Mac user knows about the next release.  Why?  because the next release makes the OS better!  DUH

I have a different theory about why PC users don't know about Longhorn and Mac  users know Tiger. PC users want as little to do with their computer as possible. They don't follow the latest OS news because they don't care about what OS they're using. They really don't care as long as they can get a memo written and log back off as fast as possible.

I kind of disagree.  Most of the Windows users that I talked with while working at a support help desk simply just didn't know or were totally inept.   Most of their responses were stuff like "Windows 97" or "Windows Office 97", etc.

But then again, most of the same people that I spoke with, didn't even know their national anthem....why should I expect them to know what operating system they are using???   


From my own experience with LongHorn.....it's really junky right now. Very slow, and the Avalon graphics feature crashes after 10 minutes of running, WinFS DOES make the system grind to a halt, and yes GUI is just a nightmare to look at.   But that's how it is with betas.  Anyone remember the OS X Public Beta???  That was impressively slow and not very workable at the time.  Kinda of like how Longhorn is now.  Putting aside my dislike for Microsoft, maybe this time they'll actually make a nice OS?  (with a downloaded, customized Skin of course )
