Could they make the UI more clunky?
And the fact that they don't have a real name for it sucks. Longhorn is the smurffiest name I've ever heard. I wonder who came up with that one: "Apple's naming theirs after big cats... maybe we can name ours after steer?"

I think those are old images of longhorn. That article is from 2003.
The newer ones are here: http://www.winsupersite.com/showcase/lo … w_2005.asp
There are some more out there as well. I just saw some this morning. They look better than the 2003 ones, but the GUI is still all over the place. In fact one looked very much like OSX. Dropshadows, translucent bits, but crappy buttons.
I thought those were photoshopped.

Of course, Longhorn is not nearly as far along as Tiger so it's not technically fair to compare something that's 1.5 years+ from release to something coming out in less than a month.
Ya, but to be fair, OS X and Rhapsody did not look like crazy cluttered messes during their developer preview releases.

You don't like it when a menu takes up a full 1/3 of the screen?

People actually use the start menu to navigate to programs these days ? wow. I dumped that for the quick launch bar back in the NT4 / IE4 days. *shrugs*

Like Explorer isn't a mess? Someone needs to completely scrap their UI and start over because it makes no sense what so ever from an intuitive stand point.

no kidding.
If I tell someone on a mac to click in the Finder, they know what i'm talking about.
if I say to a PC dude click in the explorer, after 10 seconds of thinking they'll open "The Internet" (aka Internet Explorer)
As ridiculous as it is, I think I might switch to Windows, because I spend too much time on my Mac, and maybe being computer illiterate will help my social life.

Windows: An attempt at a GUI by engineers trying to second guess what the public wants.
Mac OS X: A more humane approach to GUI design by people designing for people who want to do cool things with their computers.

The start menu is a total nightmare imho.
Explorer itself as a file manager (i.e: the explorer you get when you click 'my computer') I find it to be pretty good. In fact I like it better than the finder in OS X.

Re: Longhorn v. Tiger
Yes, I don't mind explorer. I haven't played with it in its latest incarnations though.
Thinks like explorer are just attempts to address shortcomings in native file browsing and manipulation, though. That applies to OS X too.

You know, you saying that even though it was fairly obvious that was what I was talking about only supports my position that Microsoft doesn't know how to design a gui.
I also think Explorer is a very apt term for their file management system. You don't find anything without exploring for it.

Most of my interactions with Windows are on locked down public access boxes where I have no control over which apps are in the quick launch bar; if I want to use Firefox, or Photoshop, I HAVE to use the start menus to get to it.

Even better! "Hmm, let's name it after a bar!" Maybe that's why all their manpower and resources can't make the end-all-be-all of OSes-- they're drunk all the time.

Forgive me for not assuming that you were talking about the file management interface to the explorer shell.
Its a mess ? Because a guy like you can't navigate it ? lol. I'm not so sure I'm going to chaulk that one up to bad interface design.
I also think Explorer is a very apt term for their file management system. You don't find anything without exploring for it.
No worse than the finder in my experiences.

The XP beta was called Whistler and the OS coming after longhorn is Blackcomb. Mountains where MS people ski or other places associated with those mountains have kinda become a theme for MS code names.

I don't think anything could be worse than "Bride of Buster"-- Mac OS 8.1.
Great little OS, though. One of Apple's best.
