can someone please tell me what Tiger will do for me?

because, i can't really bring myself, the filmmaker to spend 129$ on the upgrade. what will it give me and other pro/sumer users who invest in this type of art and business? is it worth it?

Spotlight seems like the biggest feature.

Automator also sounds good for repetitive tasks. A lot easier than AppleScript, which is great except for its terrible documentation.

Once professional applications start taking advantage of Core Image, Core Video, the updated version of Core Audio, and Tiger's improved support for 64 bit applications you're going to want to upgrade.

Apple will certainly update Final Cut, Motion, Logic, etc to take advantage of this stuff. Hopefully, Adobe will do the same.

In the mean time, there are a ton of little toys and tools to tide you over:

Re: can someone please tell me what Tiger will do for me?

I need to upgrade my department so every one is on the same system - I have some running 10.2 some 10.3. I am wanting to upgrade all to 10.4 but am concerned about font management (I run a pre press dept). I have not seen anything regarding Tiger and font managment. Have any of you come across any info?

Oh, and Aqua OS X hit the nail on the head. When the major app developers jump on the band wagon the upgrade to Tiger will be a no brainer. That and the dashoard.

Zalg... what are you using now for font management? Please don't tell me it's Font Book?!

Look into Suitcase Server if you have 2 or more computers who need access to the same fonts.

Re: can someone please tell me what Tiger will do for me?

The biggest changes in Tiger are on the inside. Core Image, Core Data, Core Video and all the other new frameworks and classes will make development easier and make the end result much more powerful.
As for your case, I agree with Aqua OS X. The main reason for you to upgrade is the new media technologies and what the pro media apps could do with them. H.264 is another huge step. Tiger is very focused on improvements to multimedia. It's probably the biggest step in media since... Quicktime!

Re: can someone please tell me what Tiger will do for me?

I'm looking forward to QT7 and H.264 myself.  I'm developing an online portfolio with video clips and I want to see how much of a difference H.264 will make to file sizes.

Now Apple just has to let loose those new G5s . . .

Re: can someone please tell me what Tiger will do for me?

for professionals i don't see much that tiger offers.... at least nothing that is worth installing  right away and risking all the glitches with the first release. i think spotlight will be useful, but it won't increase productivity all that much.

i'm keeping my office at 10.3.8 for the next 6 months or so... but i will enjoy tiger at home as soon as my developer's pre-release arrives (hopefully this week).

I have one Mac using Suitcase 10 and two with 11.

I was/am curious about how they would work in OS 10.4.

Fontbook is NOT a font management utility it is a sad joke for pros.

I am looking into Font resereve, also curious about how it will handle in 10.4.
