Re: newbie question: tiger

The X in Mac OS X is a Roman numeral and stands for 10, meaning Mac OS version 10. Here are the major versions of Mac OS X: Cheetah (10.0), Puma (10.1), Jaguar (10.2), Panther (10.3), and to be released on the 29th, Tiger (10.4)

Tiger is not 10.3, it is 10.4. As I said above, 10.3 is Panther. 10.3.1, 10.3.2, 10.3.3, 10.3.4, 10.3.5, 10.3.6, 10.3.7, 10.3.8, and 10.3.9 (which was made available for download today) are all minor updates to Panther (10.3). Tiger (10.4), on the other hand, is a major update to Mac OS X. The minor updates (think bug fixes, etc.) are free, but major updates are not.

Apple likes the name Mac OS X, and wants to keep it for as long as it can. After Tiger (10.4), there will still be 10.5, 10.6, 10.7, 10.8, and 10.9. However their codenames are not yet known, at least to the public.

Re: newbie question: tiger

They could even make an OS X v 10.112493124987 if they wanted to. You aren't limited to 10 revisions per dot. It is really unknown how long they are going to keep with the whole OS X thing but it seems like they are moving away from the numbers since they more commonly refer to the OS by its cat name.

If the GUI of the finder and Spotlight go thru some rrrrrrrr-radical changes, then I could see a whole new naming convention.   11  doesn't cut it for me.  It reminds me of Spinal Tap.

Re: newbie question: tiger

In theory Mac OS 11 or XI or whatever, would have to be a complete change to the nature of the OS, like if it were DOS based or something.

Re: newbie question: tiger

I'm guessing that Leopard will be next.

I'm also guessing that version XI will begin calling them by new "code" names. in other words, not big cats.
