Donating blood
Have any of you guys ever donated blood? I did for the first time yesterday and it wasn't as bad as it seemed. It didn't really even hurt at all. Except for this morning. When I blacked out twice and now I can't stand for more than a few minutes at a time and moving around is really difficult. I had to reschedule my quiz that I have today and I'm not going to my other classes. Just wondering if anyone else had a bad reaction to donation?
I ate lots of food and I drank lots of water so I'm pretty confused about why I'm all of a sudden feeling really weird. At least I'm not nauseus.

Re: Donating blood
I use to donate blood all the time when I was in highschool just so I could get out of class and pretende to be really weak the rest of the day. It never really truely bothered me like how you described, but while I was in highschool, I weighed 174 lbs.
Another thing that my friends and I would do is try to race on who can fill up the pint bag the fastest. We would flex and pump our arms really fast to try to get the blood going as fast as we could. Only after we did that did I feel dizzy, but that only lasted about 5 minuntes and I would be alright again.

Re: Donating blood
They told us to drink a lot of water so I did and my blood came out pretty fast. It only took a couple of minutes. I couldn't look though... I'm such a chicken.

Re: Donating blood
I've done it a lot. It feels great to give back what I won't really use (a fraction of my blood). Try checking out if your area does apheresis, which is a procedure that takes only one's platelets and plasma. It's great!

They turned me down. I am rediculously skinny.

They don't take kids with high midichlorian counts... so I wasn't allowed to donate.

Re: Donating blood
I faint when they draw blood. It's usually while or right after they're drawing it though. I see no reason for you to faint several hours afterwards and as such would recommend you maybe see a physician about it.

Re: Donating blood
You have a high school blood drive? We don't have that kind of thing over here, and blood donations are fairly amaturish, I know a few people who have had needles inserted in the wrong place, their blood types marked wrong etc, but it's run by volunteers so at least they're trying, eh?
I don't really like needles either, and I've only fainted after a blood test when I stood up straight after it was over. Why didn't they tell me about that?!
But I got a chocolate biscuit out of it...so I guess it was worth it

Re: Donating blood
A+. Given over a gallon (started when I was 16, 18 now). Great fodder for one of my college essays, 'cause my Dad had cancer and it was a good idea to have a reserve from a family member - thing was, I had given blood in the previous 8 weeks, and you're not supposed to give more than once every 8 weeks. So, I had to lie to the officials. Made a decent essay out of it.
Drink lots before you go, though - several times they have had a hard time getting the needle in the right place. That can be a little uncomfortable. Never passed out, but did get a little woozy playing basketball with my brother the next day.

Re: Donating blood
Sounds like your blood bank needs some major reforming. Sounds like it's not entirely legal, either...
If you live near a university, you can probably give there. But then, they might not give you cool shirts. Oh well.

you get more money for donating plasma than blood.

Re: Donating blood
There is no monetary incentive to give blood (and I doubt plasma), at least where I'm from...

Re: Donating blood
they give you a lot of money to donate plasma here... I think $125 everytime. But I also heard it hurts and I also heard that when the put the part they don't want back into you it's colder than all get out and painful at that. I have no desire to give plasma. I gave blood for two reasons... a) to find out my blood type b) if you donate blood they don't charge you for it at the hospital if you are injured and need a transfusion.

Where do they pay you for plasma? Is it the same procedure as apheresis?
