Can CS2 save back to CS1?

Hi guys! I have a question about the newest Creative Suite from Adobe--can InDesign save back to the CS1 format (or earlier?) or can it only save in a totally new, totally incompatible format for CS2? I'm using CS1 right now, and I've had loads of trouble with some customers usng an earlier version of InDesign. I can't save any changes to a document they sent me without making it unusable for them.

I know Adobe's been pulling this BS since version 1.5. They started pulling the same trick with Illustrator in version CS, requiring me to resave every single EPS and AI file I've ever created with previous versions, and making them incompatible for everyone who doesn't want to upgrade. I heard they had a new InDesign Exchange format that might be compatible with earlier versions, but it requires a plug-in that doesn't exist yet.

Any thoughts?

Well, CS was such a large departure from the early versions of InDesign, there's the logic for not being backwards compatible. I'd assume that the latest version of CS would be backwards compatible to a point though, unless you end up using features that simply aren't available in CS1.

Re: Can CS2 save back to CS1?

you know, i've been shocked that this is the first posting regarding adobe CS2. it was announced over a week ago! maybe i should have spoken up earlier. anyway:

yeah, adobe has said that IDCS2 will save backwards to IDCS. then again, they originally claimed that CS was going to save back to ID2.0. right before it was released, however, the feature was dropped. so the bottom line is that you'll have to wait until it actually comes out to be sure.

OK, on first run through I can find NO WAY to create, save or export a CS1 compatible InDesign file. Realize that this is a pre-release version and that I've spent a whopping 5 minutes with it.

Doesn't InDesign CS have an export option for InDesign Legacy?

Isn't that older versions?

Re: Can CS2 save back to CS1?

With CS2 also needing activation to run, this upgrade looks to be a hoot!

If they have no way of saving down, thats a really smurf thing to do. I can understand with the first version not being able to do it, becasue it was quite the update, but for future versions, I can't see why they would do that.

The Export as InDesign Interchange thing is what you do in CS 1 to save as InDesign 2. I'm sure CS 2 will save down to CS 1, I don't think its that much of a leap forward between the 2 applications (InDesign 2 is still lightyears ahead of Quark 6.5). All I know for sure is that InDesign 2 can't save down to InDesign 1 or 1.5.

Re: Can CS2 save back to CS1?

Ah, yes! Thanks for clearing that up for me. I'll give that InDesign Interchange thing a look now that I know it exists.

Oh, and thanks for mentioning that little tidbit about "activation," Dave. I'll be sure to steer clear of CS2 now. My brother now has a perfectly useless version of MS Office now because he had to reinstall Windows a couple times. And now that Adobe owns Macromedia it looks like they're not going to have much reason to play friendlier with us end-users.

Oh well. More comic fodder!

Re: Can CS2 save back to CS1?

indesign CS2: export as indesign interchange format, import into indesign CS1 (works both ways)
