Getting a flashed 9700 to work under 205w...
Since i've heard the DVI works i'm looking to going one of these in my Cube. I've watched progress of these topics on Cube owner but never really saw a thread where all the power requirements were fully discussed. So id like to start a topic about this and really iron out all the possibilities of running this completely off the VRM and external PSU.
What i've found:
-15inch Apple Studio LCD supposidly runs @ 50w
-Seagate 80GB runs supposidly around 12.5w according to Seagate
-MPC7410 @ 600Mhz according to a tech sheet is running possibly around 13-15w (not sure since the sheet stops at 500Mhz)
-Apple Globe speakers @ 20w
What I need to know or don't know:
-Power consumption of optical drive (smurf DVD SR-8186)
-Power consumption of Radeon 9700 Pro
-How much power the Giga Blue Fan is draining
-How much power are the RAM sticks using (all PC133, 1 512MB DIMM, and 2 256MB DIMMs)
-Other power requirements for the board/etc
-Then theres the Airport card...should it be left off or just plain removed
Right now, i've accounted for the first 100w (if theres a correction, please note it). Its just figuring out the rest that holds a problem. So, now, I know the R9700s require a bit of juice. But despite everyone at cubeowner going nuts about external PSUs and removing HDs. I'm trying to look at a way to do this without all that. So heres what i've been pondering:
Wouldn't moving the LCD onto a DVI->ADC adapter result in freeing up that 50w since it would be then powered by an external PSU for the LCD? Then if I went to a USB powered hub for the USB audio that might clear up another 10-15w.
So if you get what i'm thinkin, thats possibly freeing up about 60w of power (not taking into account any other excess). Now is that enough? I've seen some of the power reqs for the R9800s on xbit's report. But they didn't do R9700s so i'm not sure on that front.
