Re: Programming On Your Mac

I know (to an extent): Java, CASIO-BASIC, 68HC1x ASM, FORTRAN (well, Matlab, but if I say FORTRAN then it sounds cooler), Haskell, and VB  (blush!).

Re: Programming On Your Mac

I am.... trying to learn C++, but my NY school comsci class sucked big time.  The IT class here in London is way, way ahead of what I was doing back home, which was just basically programs to crash the workstation (whether the program was supposed to or not   big_smile )...

I know my way around the Warcraft III world editor...  (where's the "<sigh> max" ?)

Re: Programming On Your Mac

These smilies are great. They beat the crap out of generic yellow faces. Whenever I leave the MAF, all of the other smilies look really cheesy.

On second thought, Max is cheesy too, but in a good way.

Re: Programming On Your Mac

I do admit that these are much better than the generic smilies, but I have a hatred of all smilies.

Re: Programming On Your Mac

Anyone ever use Chipmunk Basic? You can only do so much with it, but it is a great way to learn about programming and computers in general. It's even carbonized and it's free! Apple should bundle this on their systems, especially for ecucation. This could be a great tool for math classes, as it forces kids to use logic in a real world scenario. And the price is right, so c'mon Apple get with it! (Ignoring for the moment that Apple cannot hear me.)

Re: Programming On Your Mac

I program.  A lot.  I AM A FIEND.  I mostly use Squeak Smalltalk, but I do some stuff in Perl, Common Lisp and Objective-C as well.  I very much so prefer the Mac as a programmer for a number of reasons.  Programming is a goodly amount of what I do in front of my iBook.

Hell, the Mac is still a better platform for programming, even though I spend most of my time in Squeak Smalltalk as my GUI environment.

P.S. C++ is for chumps.  At least how it's usually used And Java is for even bigger chumps... but at least they've wisened up at least to the point of figuring out that garbage collection is a good thing.

"Like the creators of sitcoms or junk food or package tours, Java's designers were consciously designing a product for people not as smart as them."  -- paul graham

P.P.S. I don't really believe that any one language can be entirely bad or entirely good- but for the bulk of what people use C++ for really would benefit from the use of a more appropriatelanguage.
