Re: Flashing 6800's or 9800 ATi cards. Any luck?
Yeah well I risked it and am running a 9800 Pro.
The guys over at strange dogs know their stuff.
I might also note, it's all well and good adding a good GPU to your Mac, but if your CPU isn't up to scratch, Tiger can really bog down. Unfortunate but thats how it goes.

I hope you're planning on gaming. Cards in that class aren't really needed for general purpose use, even with the latest OS video enhancements.

Well with a 733 CPU, the 9800 Pro is almost useless as a multimedia machine in Tiger. The CPU just can't keep up. As far as gaming goes, I see a marked improvement but once again the CPU lets it down. (ie Quake3A benchmarks don't change between highest and lowest settings)
I'm currently investigating a newer CPU to compliment the GPU.

You now have video 'power to burn' then, anyway. With ATi 3D Overrides you can pretty much max out your FSAA/AF settings without much framerate hit, if any.

Re: Flashing 6800's or 9800 ATi cards. Any luck?
Go with a 7455 or 7457 if you can, the L3 cache helps a lot. While the 47s max out at 2Ghz, without more than 512K L2 they flop. A dual 57 would be nice, even if its a 1.3Ghz model. It can whip a Dual 1.6 47 in tests. When the 47s first came out Giga stated the 1.8Ghz was about on par with a 1.4Ghz 55 and sure enough when tests finally got made public, they were like that. The single processor 57s also really perform nice too but I havent seen many of them around for the Quicksilver models.
Certainly do a lot of research before you buy. If you wait awhile then hopefully the 48s will be out by the time you are ready to purchase.

Cool, thanks for that. I'm only after a marginal bump, but I'll probably go dual. Looks like Apple is optimizing for dual (and quad) a lot now.

Re: Flashing 6800's or 9800 ATi cards. Any luck?
Go a Dual 1.3 57 if you have the $$$ then. I know PL has had trouble in the past but so far i've seen some pretty positive reviews on these upgrades. Giga sells 57s and they would be decent but they don't offer Dual models in the 57s. They do have them in the 55s however. Sonnets then charge you an arm and a leg. They can be less hassle in some cases but they can't be clocked and they use 55s. 55 wouldn't be bad for you, its still got L3 but you loose 256K on the L2. This is where you really need to investigate things a lot to be sure of the performance you will be getting depending on what CPU you go with.

I'm probably going to go with a Giga 1.2 7455 its about all I can afford at $551 AUD. If I spend too much on this machine, it will have cost more than a G5.

That one should work nicely for ya
. Just besure to read any reviews on xlr8yourmac that you can so you are prepared if an issue comes up. So far the 55s across the board have been rather stable from what i've seen.
