Halo 3 rumors

HBO reports on rumors of Halo 3.

May 13, 2005

Halo 3 Rumors Swirl
More people than died on Reach have contacted us about the Game Reactor article - so even though it's totally unconfirmed at this point, we're going to mention it, if only to get folks to stop sending us mail about it. Game Reactor, a Danish magazine, has published an article which includes an interview with Peter Moore, Corporate VP of Worldwide Marketing for Microsoft's Home/Entertainment Division. In it, he states that Halo 3 will be out within a year. (It's unclear to me whether he means a year from now, or a year from the release of the Xbox360, this fall.) Either way, until someone from Bungie says 'yep, we're actually making this', we're not going to move this to the 'confirmed' column... but we DO know about it, thanks. (Louis Wu 10:56:13)

I'm putting money on it being a post that belongs in a different topic involving smurf.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

Bungie doesn't necessarily have to be the ones making it, do they? They outsourced Halo for Mac, and I think the later Myths were done by people other than Bungie too, weren't they?

Re: Halo 3 rumors

Bungie 'outsourced' the Mac/PC port of Halo, and vetted the minor content changes like new MP maps. Myth was sold outright to get some operating capital- they no longer own that title. Yes, Wolf 3* was made by someone else after the sale.

I'd be amazed if any dev besides Bungie made a new Halo game.

Apparently they don't know own Oni anymore either.  Marathon and Halo are about the bulk of their property.  Well, the property worth a darn anyway.

I wouldn't be too amazed.

Bungie's got a lot of talent, and I can't see how they would enjoy wasting it on a single franchise. I'm sure there people want to move on to something more innovative.

You are mixing things up slightly.  Take 2 owned 19.9% of the company; when Microsoft bought Bungie, Take 2 got (among other things) the rights to Oni and Myth in exchange for their chunk of Bungie.

I wouldnt call marathon or halo a waste ot lacking innovation.  Hell, people are still trying to figure some of the stuff in marathon out!

Thanks for the clarification. It's better to be corrected and informed thereafter than to continue in ignorance. up

Are you aware of the Pathways Into Darkness mod on the Doom 3 engine? The first level was out a month or two ago.

And don't tell me you don't still play Minotaur. C'mon, 'fess up...

A Halo 3 would be interesting, and probibly nice. But past that and I think we're headed straight into Tomb Raider territory, if you know what I mean.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

They've already said, in interviews, that a HUGE chunk of Halo-universe history has been timelined out, and what we've seen of Halo is like a fraction of a second in comparison with what they've thought out (from what I remember, thousands of years of the chronology have been planned out, both leading up to what we've seen, and what comes after).  Based on that, they could conceivably make games until well after I'm able to play them.

Now, that said, I'm expecting to see Halo 3, and then we'll probably see games that take place long after this part of the saga is over.  King of like looking at the KotOR series, and then the Star Wars movies.  Or anything from the StarSeige universe (StarSeige, Tribes/T2, T:V)

Oooo! That sounds difficult. I mean, its not everyday that you can fight off alien hordes to get to the jelly jar.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

It's confirmed. Next week's Time Magazine has none other than Bill the Gates himself... Gamespot says

In next week's issue of Time Magazine--which features Gates holding the Xbox 360 on the cover--Gates mentioned plans for the release of the much-anticipated follow-up to the best-selling console shooter. In a parenthetical sidebar in the article, Time says the following:

"Note to the hard-core faithful: the next version of Halo will not, repeat not, be ready in time for the launch of Xbox 360. It will be part of the all-important second wave next spring. 'It's perfect,' Gates says, radiant with bloodlust. 'The day Sony launches [the new PlayStation], and they walk right into Halo 3.'"

While Microsoft reps were not available for comment as of press time, Gates' comments appear to confirm the theory that Microsoft will release Halo 3 either simultaneously or near the release of Sony's next-gen console. It also marks further official confirmation that a third Halo is indeed in the works and will be released for the Xbox 360.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

Love em or hate em that's a pretty good move.  I can't really imagine one game taking that much of the polish off of an entirely new console.  Unless it's really, really good.  And I doubt that--Halo 2 was disappointing.

I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

H2 was a bit polarizing, but aesthetic judgements aren't really germane... point is, at $125M in launch day revenues (possibly the biggest in entertainment history), 6.5M units sold since Nov., and the doubling of Xbox Live to 1.5M members since then, H2 was huge. Alienation of a segment of the hardcore may have as much relevance to the biz strategy as the loss of some sales to Mac users resulting from the Bungie acquisition... i.e., not much.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

Has it yet dawned on any of you half-wits that the reason that Halo 2 failed to live up to all its hype (in particular, the reason it ended so abruptly) is that Microsoft made a sneaky albeit strategic move to break what should have been a complete game into two parts. The first to keep the fanboys strung along -- just long enough for the second part to steal Sony's PS3 thunder.  Halo is the ony exclusive franchise on the Xbox that is worth a damn, but they only had the one story arc on the drawing board and near completion.  Microsoft needed something to keep sales going through this past holiday season -- but dilemma of dilemmas, they also needed something to counter the competition when the next generation of consoles arrived. Thus begets your corporate hack and repackage job, the equivalent of a baby food manufacturer padding their product with sawdust.

It was the plan from the beginning. I wouldn't be surprised to find that Halo 3 is already in the can, ready to be launched right when the PS3 goes on sale.

You suckers are just being granted the "opportunity" by Microsoft to wait a year or more to fork out another 50 bucks for what you already payed for last year.  The fact that the interrim stalling tactic that H2 has proven to be has actually garnered 6.5M units sold tells me just how many fools there really are.  But I don't doubt the same Darwinian deadends will be lined up to pay the same amount again to get the other half of what they thought they were getting with H2.

Re: Halo 3 rumors

Halo 2 was rushed to completion.  That's a fact, and there's no denying it.  It was either 50 dollars for a shorter Halo 2 that was lacking some of the features it could have had in November, or a complete Halo 2 coming out on the Xbox/Xbox360 in late 2005/2006.  Microsoft didn't purposely make Bungie unable to complete Halo 2.  And it's not like there's another half of Halo 2 that was just cut from the final product only to be sold in 2006.

But shady marketing of games is here to stay.  It's been that way in the Movie industry for decades.  Have fun playing all your little independent shareware games if you don't like the way the game industry works.  I dunno about you, but I kinda liked Halo 2.  It doesn't matter if they stretched out the storyline, rather than making it nice and tight.  That just means that I'll be enjoying more of Halo later on.  And you... you can keep on calling people half-witted suckers if it makes you feel better.

P.S. you might at least want to watch the Halo 2 documentary that came with the special edition before blinding extoling your "insider" knowledge on Halo 2.

Thank you for your vast, unique insights and extravagant insults. You "wouldn't be surprised" if [..]? Weren't you in on the meeting with Bill where this was all decided? You write certainties as if privy to enough other inside knowledge.

I strongly suggest you tone it down in future.
