What you like or don't like about Tiger...

Got it installed on my iBook and my Cube today. So far, it doesn't seem all that huge of an improvement. What i've liked about it so far is:

-New Mail app (very nice now)
-Dictionary (been wishin for one for awhile now)
-The language translator in Dashboard (Nox Geruche wie der Kolben eines Elefanten!) (yah its not accurate but close enough, you'll have to figure it out yourself tongue)
-Having a calendar in Dashboard
-iChat AV seems to have some nice features added now
-Unit converter in dashboard (this will come in real handy)

What I don't like:

-OpenGL game performance was down 1-3fps on both machines in just about every game i've tested (rather ticked at this after I heard from soo many that X.4 was going to have some really nice GL updates. Heck, X.3.9 was faster for me.) (Could be better for R9600 or R9800 GPUs)
-Spotlight having to index your drive when you first get X.4 installed (really annoying when you want to get underway right away)
-lack of any low level effects for Core Image. (Yeah I know I need a better GPU but I was hoping for at least something new)

Re: What you like or don't like about Tiger...

I don't like that USB Overdrive seems to be broken.  It sorta worked until I re-installed it, which added a kernel extension that broke all my USB devices, keyboard and mouse included, so I did a Safe Boot (hold down the shift key while booting) and removed the offending kext and all is well - except the mouse buttons I had programmed are now just buttons that don't do anything.

I thought UT2004 played a bit smoother, but I don't pay much attention to frame rates so I probably wouldn't notice a few frames here and there.

I really like the new Mail app, and the Dictionary.  On my 2.5 G5 Spotlight didn't take long to index everything and now it's amazing.  I think that's going to be the biggest new feature for me.  I also like that taking a screen shot (cmd-shift-4 or any of the other key combos you want) now saves images as PNG's instead of PDF's, so now I don't have to open them in Preview and export them to something else (which was usually PNG anyway).

Photoshop (I'm still running 7.0.1) doesn't seem to want to get past the part where it updates online components, but I've had the problem before and I think it's as likely to be a Photoshop problem as it is a Tiger one, so we'll see.  Edit:  I just tried again after moving my old Photoshop .plist file out of my Library/Preferences folder and it started right up, so Tiger seems to be off the hook for now...

I had tweaked my NTP config (that's what the Time & Date uses to sync the system clock from a time server on the Internet) so that it referenced a few different time servers and Tiger shows all of them in the Time & Date preference panes, which surprised me, but in a good way.

Contextual menus seem to pop up a bit faster, as do other menus.  Overall Tiger feels a bit snappier.

Also, I'd been having a key-repeating problem when typing (it's a not too uncommon issue discussed on the Apple Discussion Forums) that seems to be somewhat improved, but it's still too early to say for sure.

So far, mostly good.  I'm still exploring, so I'm sure there'll be at least a few other surprises in store for me.

Figured it would index faster for a G5. You both should also see better improvements in X.4 just because you have a G5. Heard it was going to have some special 64bit features.

One more feature I really like:  more detailed security information when you download software, run an app that wants you to authenticate so it can do admin things, and the first time you tun an app.  You can now see exactly what program is requesting admin access, and if you download a disk image that contains a program it asks if you're sure you want to do that (at least with Safari - I haven't yet tried it with other browsers).  Apple seems to be adding little things here and there to make accidentally running a hidden trojan a little harder.  I'd suggest people get in the habit of actually looking at this additional information as a matter of course, just like you should pay attention any time your browser pops up a window about a bad or unverifiable certificate when you go to a secure site.

Love Dashboard and Spotlight, and the new system transfers more to your GPU, so yes, cougar, it is a lot better for those of us with the nice Radeons smile

Only complaint is the new iChat.  Extremely disappointing.  Less reliable than the iChat that came with Jaguar.  It will disconnect me, but not tell me, and it still looks like im online.  I end up messaging peeps for 5 minutes before I realize whats happened.  Oh well, back to AIM. sad

Adium. It's better than iChat anyway.

Tiger makes a lot of changes to the Kernel, so it's not suprising that some things would break. On the other hand, Apple has worked hard to structure things so that Tiger kexts will be forward-compatable. So look at it like this: at least it won't happen again!

Re: What you like or don't like about Tiger...

One slight annoyance: with "show all file extensions" checked in the Finder Preferences, all my applications are listed with the ".app" extension. Maybe it's to head off a Windows- like "myPic.jpg.exe" type of exploit in the future, but it's odd to see the extension.

I could have sworn that whenever an app is named, for example, iTunes4.8.app the .app shows up anyway in Panther.

Re: What you like or don't like about Tiger...

Hmm, I"m running Tiger on the laptop and Panther on the G5. I have "show all file extensions" checked in the Finder Preferences in Panther, but iTunes and all my other apps don't show the .app extension. Is this standard for Tiger?

Spotlight doesn't appear to search in any system files, which pisses me off. Plus when you hit cmd-F to get the search thing, that doesn't seem to search in the system files off. Bah. That's basically the only thing I don't like.

As for a FPS decrease, NC, I have an increase. I have a 10FPS increase in Halo, as well as like a 15FPS increase in jedi academy. Everything is quite a bit quicker in all apps as well.

What are your settings again (in brief, anyway)?
