How to install Tiger w/o dvd drive??

I have an old dual 600 (?) with a cd burner but no DVD drive. I bought Tiger but cannot install because its on a DVD.  Nowhere on the Tiger box does it say this wasneeded. I have instaled in on my powerbook and tried to use it as a firewire drive and install that way, but it didnt work. I also tried to create a disc image, but when it restarts to start installation, it doesnt work.

Are there any other ways?

Call/ walk into an Apple store. You can get CDs for a 10$ handling / shipping fee.

They probably should have included a DVD drive under the system requirements though. Or some note about the trade-in program.

Re: How to install Tiger w/o dvd drive??

Look carefully on the box and there is a notice that it is a DVD. I no longer have my Tiger box but I also believe there are instruction for trading the DVD in for CDs. You have to send the DVD and proof of purchase to Apple along with, I think this is right $9.95, and they will return you a set of Tiger install CDs.

On the other hand I installed Tiger on my wife's G4/733 Quicksilver, that does not have a DVD by connecting it to my iBook G3/600 with a firewire cable. Then booting the Quicksilver while holding down the "T" key to put it into Firewire target disk mode. Then I booted the iBook from the Tiger install DVD in the iBook's combo drive and ran the installer from there using the Quicksilver's hard drive as the install target. I suppose I could have used SuperDuper to clone the installation on the iBook to the Quicksilver just as well. (Carbon Copy Cloner according to the developer breaks Tiger).

Re: How to install Tiger w/o dvd drive??

It seems to me the best solution would be to install a DVD drive in the machine. If a person is willing to spend the money for Tiger they obviously intend to keep it for a while so upgrading the hardware seems reasonable to me. Here in Canada DVD-ROM drives are available for $20 and the fastest combo drives are well under $100. I have seen DVD burners for under $100.

I used my Powerbook to do the same thing for an old iMac. smile
