Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

My old iMac just isn't cutting it anymore and I've really wanted a laptop for a long time now. I really like the features of the new iBook, but I am wondering...

Can you use it like a home computer, as Duos with Duo docks did years ago? That is, hook it up to a monitor and maybe a keyboard and mouse and would I be able to get the resolution on the monitor above 1024x768?

I can hook it up to a TV easily, right?

How often should I expect to replace the battery, once every few years?

If I don't get the bluetooth option, I could install it later on, right? It isn't as though they would never sell the means to do it?

Airport is completely compatible with virtually every wireless router, right?

Is the graphics card bad for playing games? That's not my main concern, but I hear complaints about it and I don't want to find it useless for new games released two years later.

I'm pretty sure of the answers to these, but I am a little nervous about it and don't want to find anything unexpected. If you have any advice for someone that's never owned a laptop, I'd appreciate it!

Thanks all smile

Re: Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

Here's my take.  Add or correct as you will, forumites.  I would wait until WWDC  June 6th as the iBooks are due for an upgrade and that would be an natural place to make the announcement.

"Can you use it like a home computer, as Duos with Duo docks did years ago? That is, hook it up to a monitor and maybe a keyboard and mouse and would I be able to get the resolution on the monitor above 1024x768?"

You can hook an external monitor to it.  It will mirror your iBook or you can span both monitors with a hack called, I think, Screen Spanning Doctor.  You can cable or bluetooth a keyboard and mouse as far as I know.

"I can hook it up to a TV easily, right?"

I don't know

"How often should I expect to replace the battery, once every few years?"

Yes, I think.

"If I don't get the bluetooth option, I could install it later on, right? It isn't as though they would never sell the means to do it?"

USB bluetooth dongle about $40

"Airport is completely compatible with virtually every wireless router, right?"

I believe so.

"Is the graphics card bad for playing games? That's not my main concern, but I hear complaints about it and I don't want to find it useless for new games released two years later."

I have no idea.

I'm not a doctor but I'll take a look!

Re: Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

As far as playing games on an iBook goes, it really depends on what type of games you plan on playing.  The current video card is an ATi Radeon 9200 which, to be blunt, is fairly weak.  If you plan on playing any modern FPS game it's pretty much out of the question as are any future 3D intensive RTS games such as AoE III, Rise of Legends, or Rome: Total War.

However, if your gaming needs consists of puzzle-esque games or slightly older stuff like Warcraft III it should be able to handle them so long as you don't set the resolution too high.

Re: Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

it is similar to a duo in that there are a full range of ports so you can connect just about everything available to a desktop to your new ibook. (gross oversimplification, i know) however, there is no docking station. there are third party solutions for a dedicated dock.

you can connect to a tv with an apple av cable, thats extra.

i would recommend getting bluetooth installed from the beginning since adding it in later means having an external thing hang off one of your usb ports. to me, $40 is worth avoiding possible clunkyness later on, especially because its a laptop.

airport is compatible with 802.11b, 802.11g, but not 802.11a. the g and g variants are by far the most common available.

no idea about the graphics card, but i think its a good rule that anything you buy now will be practically worthless in two years as far as games go.

Re: Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

Sorry mate, but as to the gaming one does not get an ibook (or really a laptop for that matter) for gaming.  You can't really play any game that was new in the last 2 years much less one that will be new 2 years from now.  Other than this setback it is a fantastic computer.  Not sure how computer savvy you are, but I would get the laptop for all practical purposes, and then build a wintel box at some point if you get into gaming.  Getting an old case off your parents, using the monitor you have, and general scavenging means that you could probably build a very good gaming machine (for current games) at a price point of about $500.  Just the 2 cents from an avid gamer and mac user.  By dumping about $300 every 2 years into my wintel box I can keep it pretty up to date.  Really I just dump some money in whenever there's a new game that my computer can't handle.

Thanks for all the posts folks! I'll very likely be placing an order for an iBook a week from now, after the WWDC, of course.

I'll be a Mac-Addict for a while yet wink

They never introduce models after the keynote address, right? I've been away from paying close attention to Apple for a few years, but all new upgrades are made during the keynote still?

Re: Thinking about buy a new iBook, questions-

I wouldn't think they'd release a consumer portable at a conference for developers. But I imagine iBooks will be released soon.

Last I checked, the iBook comes with a VGA adapter. You have to pay another $19 or so for a s-video/RCA video adapter.

Really? It seemed a few years ago, all the changes in the Apple line came during Jobs' keynote addresses. Have they ever bumped a line outside of a keynote?

I'm not thinking or suggesting they absolutely would, but it seems like the WWDC would be a good time to order, just to make sure.

Keynotes at MacWorlds mostly, not WWDC.

Quite a few times, actually. Keynotes usually bring the big announcements. I wouldn't buy an iBook right now, though. They are (over)due for an upgrade.
