Upgrading to SATA
Is it worth upping an ATA/100 Mac to Serial ATA?
A few months ago some experts told me that most SATA drives were just haxored to fit the SATA and didn't yet offer a big advantage over 100 drives.
Also, can I find a 10K rpm drive that isn't made by WD (blech), is SATA, and is over 200 GB?

Re: Upgrading to SATA
I believe Seagate makes a 10K rpm SATA drive, and I've heard lots of good things about them.
In order to take advantage of SATA, you really do need faster drives. The standard 7200rpm drives will not giv you a huge performance boost over ATA 100 drives ofthe same speed. 10K rpm drives, however, will give you a noticeable real world improvement, especially if you install two of the same drive as a RAID configuration.

Re: Upgrading to SATA
Then again, I guess Seagate isn't making 10k drives for SATA, only SCSI.
And I can't seem to find anyone but WD who is.
?

Yes there has. You must not pay a whole lot of attention.
IBM had their Deathstar era and WD has taken an undeniable dip in reliability.

Re: Upgrading to SATA
You have a few WD's, don't you Marc?
Maxtor seems to fail more than others btw. The Deathstar is right on target. I had an IBM/Hitachi drive crap out, though I brought it back to life and it's worked ever since. Knock-knock-knock.

Oh, and PMM. I'm surprised at you. You have an iMac now? You used to deride iMac users as being less familiar with their machines then Power Mac users.

Re: Upgrading to SATA
Got a nice WD in my iMac DV 400 here and it works like a charm. Serial ATA will probably grant you a speed boost of some sort but the big advantage will be if or when you upgrade to a system with SATA.

And I still do.
You see; I cannot rightly be called an iMac user. I switch machines every few months out of boredom and for exploratory reasons. This is my first AIO desktop. I decided to dip my feet in the simplistic waters of the wireless world.
I assure you, the extent to which Power Mac owners (on the average) are more knowledgable than iMac owners has not been affected by my purchasing of an iMac.
