Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
Think all this G5 talk is a misunderstanding? Might a G4 "DUAL CORE" processor from Freescale be more logical? Uses only 10 watts, minimal heat. Released last August(?), due to appear in a PB this June(?). Freescale's previous processors released last February (1.42 Ghz) found their way into the new Mac Mini in January. Somebody may have heard 64 bit and ASSUMED it was a G5. What are the chances?

If you crammed a G5 into a Mini, wouldn't it look like this?
Oh, wait, that makes it a Cube.....

Aside from being drawn fuglyly (it's a word) that's quite a nice design

It certainly wouldn't hurt if the dual core G4s support 64 bit instructions sets...

Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
Well Apple has to release a 64bit laptop sometime soon. I also can't seem them being able to sustain their current lean design across the laptop line. I think the top end machine has to carry a bit of bulk. To me, the Pismo/Lombard was about the perfect size. Not too large, not too small but roomy enough for a decent cooling system.

I really want to buy a Powerbook or iBook, but I have been holding out for the G5. I really hope this comes to pass because I am about to take this Dell POS fishing with me.

My PowerBook won't come fishing with me. Says it's too boring.
What kind of lure does your Dell use?

Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
Actually, I was thinking of using it as an anchor. I hate that thing.
The Dell belongs to my employer. That's the only reason I have it. The only software the company really uses is MS Office and I use that on my Mac at home.

Lombard's and their non-OSX supported graphics accelerators rock, but 64-bit would be nice though. I could probably even just afford a second-hand G5 based PB off ebay within about 5 years of it's release too!
Hi Reece, hows Uni? Okay, now the formalities are over with, send me the G4 and the Pismo and I won't egg your dorm

Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
If they somehow managed to get the G4 up to like 2.5 Ghz with ddr2 ram interface it would be still a worthy compertitor with much less power consumption

It can't be true, Apple would have made them take it down by now (from what I know). Too bad though.

Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
APPLE RELEASES:
imac powermac ibook powerbook
G3 1998 1997 1999 1997
G4 2002 1999 2003 2001
G5 2004 2003 ???????????????
If laptop trends continue, another 4 year interval should occur: that is powerbook G5 in 2005, ibook G5 in 2007
But, if trends roughly follow that of the -mac lines, ibook G5 should be in 2006, roughly 1 year after powerbook G5 if released this year
Needless to say, not much chance of ibook + powerbook being released together, however if we are lucky both will be released by 2007
There is also the possibility of a dual core G4 powerbook/ibook if a G5 processor wont fit: http://www.forbes.com/business/2004/10/ … scale.html

I seriously doubt the iBook G5 would come out with the Powerbook G5 if it does come out.
All these rumors are great, but once one comes out, I'd definitely be worried about whether or not the cooling issues are fully resolved.
Think about the 15" battery and imagine if that was the processor, or even most of the computer. That's why I believe that this time Apple is putting into this is worthwhile.
I'd rather have a functioning computer than a time bomb on my lap.
Exactly. I don't know how long we have been talking about when the Powerbook G5 will come out, but frankly I agree with spiffking on this one.
Maybe a little speed boost, some extra standard RAM, longer lasting battery, and getting the heat undercontrol would be fine with me. I would much rather have that, than a malfunctioning G5. I'm hoping that Apple waits to get the G5 Powerbook right...the FIRST time.

Re: Powerbook G5 in Q2?
Well, Apple has to do something! If they don't get a 64bit Laptop out the door and on the shelves by the end of the year, they are going to start loosing laptop market share.
