Re: It's official: the EU constitution has been rejected again

I talked with a friend about it and he told me

According to polls the Euro currency was not a big issue in the voting. Not even the fact that the Dutch pay the most per head to the EU than other countries (which will be changed). Nor the fact that we apparently exchanged our Guilder for too little money for the Euro (!).

The biggest complaint was that the EU has grown too fast. 10 more countries in one go.
So this No-vote was not so much against Turkey as a country, but just as another country that would enter the EU in a short time.
Another issue was that the people felt that the EU was deciding over things that should be decided by the local governments.
So too much power for the EU. Too much centralization. (again, a 'constitution' implies a lot more centralization)
Another thing was that this was the *first* opportunity the dutch could speak out on the EU.
Ofcourse we had every 4 year EU elections, but that doesn't give you much room to really say no to something.

So all in all this was a HUGE slap on the wrist for the dutch politicians. They were completely out of touch wich what their voters really wanted.
Nobody, not even the parties who campaigned against the constitution expected such a large No-vote.

One thing the dutch are not saying No to is the EU. The EU is good for us and we need the EU. Hell, we were one of the 6 founding countries.
But an EU that is not a super-state and is lean and efficient. And keeps itself busy with the big picture and not with local issues.
