Re: I Now Know My Way Around the Clamshell's Innards
DUDE!
this is perfect, i just got an iBook too, 300 blueberry etc.... i need to swap out the HD and wouldn't mind some advice on overclocking either... 300 is so slow.... RAM-wise, it's got 384 MB's and i GUESS that's what i'll have to live with for right now... i can't spend that much for a 512 chip, ~88$? anyways, i've yet to make any mods requiring me to take off the topcase, which i'm planning on doing tonight.... so.... thoughts, suggestions, comments?
regards-
travis
ps. a friend gave me a 20 gig drive, but i'll have to see how tall it is, i'd really hate to open it all up just to find out that i'ts too tall or that i'd have to cut into my new precious and newly acquired 'book

Re: I Now Know My Way Around the Clamshell's Innards
Just take a ruler to the drive. If it's 8mm, you're in luck. 9.5 I think would still fit, but 12.5mm will definitely not, at least without modification.
As for the takeapart, just take your time the first time around. If you've never done something like this before, I'd say it will take you between 90 and 120 minutes. Once you know your way around, it's more like 20 to disassemble and reassemble. Of course, things take longer when soldering and dremeling come into play.
You'll need a T7 torx bit and sizes 0 and 00 phillips bits.
First thing is to close the iBook, flip it over and remove the battery. There are screws in the battery bay. Remove those and remove the ones throught the clear plastic at the back of the iBook.
Then, open the CD ROM, and you'll see a small phillips screw. Remember, the iBook is still on its back.
Then, flip it back over, remove the keyboard, remove the tray the Airport card sits in, and disconnect the keyboard and trackpad ribbon cables. Afterword, gently pry the palmrest plastics away, being careful not to break the speaker cable, and you'll see what you're in for next
Basically, from here on out, you'll want to disconnect all cables beforehand, if you can get to them, to prevent damaging them. Find a way that is best for you to keep track of the screws, using, maybe, an old egg carton, and draw sketches, if you need to.
And, yes, the screen assembly will need to come off to get to the hard drive ( though I think an added measure to my 12.5mm hard drive mod would resolve such an issue ).
To overclok the CPU, simply use the link I provided earlier in the thread, to see the PLL configuration and close-up photos of the resistors.
Hope that helps.

yep, it's 9.5mm-ish, so I think we're good

Actually, I think the official spec calls for a T8? but anyways, i have the T8, and it appears to work

yep, i'm planning on using the PBfixit guide with the screw guide :-)

what? there's some way i can change out the drive without taking out the display? that's the part that i'm most worried about

right, i looked at that site, but does that mean i've got to cut and also re-solder some resistors? i can't just manually flip a switch or something? :'(
anyways, thanks man!

Re: I Now Know My Way Around the Clamshell's Innards
Unfortunately, there's a metal guard which covers everything, including the hard drive, and part of the support for the screen assembly is on top of it.
And, yes, warm up that soldering iron

w3wt!
i'm up to 20 gigs now, and nary a screw left over.... i accidentally whacked one of the shiny looking silver patches when i was removing the hard drive's standoff screws.... but upon inspection everyting looks dandy! thanks to carbon copy cloner i'm all back to business.... as an added perk, i THINK the drive i put in was an OEM compaq 20 gig one... :-P poopoo on compaq, but this drive is a TON quieter than the old one... and almost 7 times bigger... yay!
thanks for the help guys!

9.5 mm is fine, that's a standard slim-line notebook drive, as used in all iBooks. You'll be hard-pressed to find a 12.5 mm notebook drive these days, anyway.
8.5 mm drives were only made for a short while by Toshiba, and used in the early Toshiba Libretto subnotebooks.

Well, the 8mm was the Apple-branded stock drive.

Really? That's mighty interesting. Do you still have it? What brand is it? What model number?

Re: I Now Know My Way Around the Clamshell's Innards
Yeah, I have it.
It is, indeed, a Toshiba.
It's the only reason I even made mention of an 8mm drive.
The model number is HDD2140, and according to the specs, it's exactly 8.45mm, tho my drafting quipment shows me 8 ( well whatever, I'm not splitting hairs over that ).
Either way, I have a 12.5mm drive installed now, and I'd say they're fairly common on Craig's List.
I couldn't pass up 60gigs at 5400rpm for fifty bucks and an excuse to visit Sunnyvale/ leave San Fran for a bit.

Re: I Now Know My Way Around the Clamshell's Innards
Nice. I thought Toshiba had stopped making 8.5 mm drives ages ago. That's a 3.2 GB drive, right? That'd make a perfect upgrade for a Libretto. Good news, thanks.
Yeah, 12.5 mm drives enjoyed a short revival not too long ago, when the bigger sized notebook drives came in that form factor. Nowadays, even most 100 GB drives are slimline, IIRC.
