So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

Who's going to custom build their OS X rig?

I have a 2.8Ghz P4 a friend gave me, along with an 800mhz logic board with 8x AGP and dual SATA.
I'm thinking I can squeeze 3.2Ghz out of it with efficient cooling, definitely 3Ghz.

Well, being that X is only on developer's workstations right now, it may be a while before I could actually run X on it.

But, who knows, mybe they'll release it to the public sooner than I expect.

Do we know yet whether OS X will work on non-Apple Pentiums? I was under the impression that it would only run on Apple-custom hardware.

Heh, I'm just about in the mix for a render farm. I was hoping to go with Mac OS X because it would be easier to set it up w/o the need for an extra monitor.

Re: So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

You will not be able to run OS X on PCs. Apple did not choose today to announce 'OS X on x86', they announced 'Intel in Macs'. There is a vast difference and nobody seems to understand it or be paying attention to it.

Apple will maintain hardware control. The inability to run OS X on x86 systems was less about getting around the processor difference than it was about getting around Apple's ROMs and OpenFirmware, which are not going anywhere.

Again; You not be able to run OS X on non-Apple systems without a custom Apple component pertaining to the ROM and/or the OF.

Why do you think Apple is selling the developer systems and not just telling everybody to go out and buy off the shelf eMachines?

Re: So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

Yeah, you don't get around the other fourm threads much.
If you had, you'd have seen my various posts inqiuring into whether or not Mac On Linux would be ported to x86 verisons of Linux.
It's worked for non-Apple PowerPCs ( which don't have the ROM or Firmware either ), I'm certain someone can make it work on the new platform, as well, which would enable you to run X on any x86 box running Linux, or at least any Intel box running Linux.
And considering Steve Jobs displayed OS X running on a PENTIUM 4, I think it's very safe to say x86.

Apple is selling developer systems for the same reason they have in the past, and it's for the same reason they're only seeding the x86 version of OS X to developers. It's not ready for public consumption. Apples will still be manufactured by other companies, of pieces manufactured by other companies, same as with the PowerPC, which brings me full-circle to the point I've made about MOL.

And you've made a BAD assumption; about me not understanding Mac ROMs and firmware, but thanks for the history lesson...

I think you're also making the assumption that these developer's boxes are plain Intels without the ROM and firmware, without any evidence to back that sort of claim.

If you're simply pissed because they've made the switch, that's fine, but save the rest of us the drama, thanks.

It sounds like a good PC-Mac (?), i'll also probably want to build my custom PC-Mac (?) computer so it can run the x86 version of OSX, finally, games just might run super fast..... drool

Re: So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

First thought I had was: "Oh this is gonna make PearPC ppl happy" wink

They will no longer have to emulate a RISC processor and get horrible speeds. Then with loads of new x86 ppl messing with Macs now its just gonna be a matter of time until some hackers got OSX cracked.

Meesa thinkin Apple underestimates the resiliance of the PC hacking community wink lol.

When they do get it hacked i'll be building me a real x86 Mac system off a Athlon 64 dual core setup and loads of other sweet stuff big_smile

Heck with Pentiums, Intel blows, i'm goin AMD all the way tongue big_smile

Re: So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

Hey I made a thread about it and I would totally be willing to do it to pioneer the way for this but I can't find the resistor settings or any high rez picts of the board in the iBook.

I'd love to get my 1.2Ghz iBook above 1.33Ghz as well.

Re: So, Who's Up For Building a Pentium 4 Mac?

Evidence so far points in the direction of the Apple Intel dev box being an Intel D945GTP motherboard with a Pentium 4 660 CPU. Right off the shelf.

The motherboard can be had for about $140, so all you need then are a CPU and a copy of Tiger for Intel.
