PDFs and text

Howdy. I've got a 15-page PDF from a client that we need to get printed. The print shop is telling me that the black text is all specified as 100% each of CMYK. They need me to strip out the CMY of that text. I don't have the original files and I'm not too thrilled about taking each page of this into Illustrator to fix the color by hand. Is there an easy, fast, cheap way to do this (I know I only get to pick two of the three, but humor me). Thanks much!

Look at it this way: you've sold as many paintings as Van Gogh—and you have both your ears.
Thanks, Dad.

Re: PDFs and text

Print separations and save as postscript. Then just grab one of your pick, distill and delete the first 45 pages. You should end up with 15 pages of 100% black text.

Right?

Re: PDFs and text

How about using "Select Similar (fill or stroke)" to select the 100% CMYK ink then convert it to K only?

Re: PDFs and text

In what, mahakali? Illustrator? I'd still have to do it all one page at a time.

Re: PDFs and text

I tried opening these in Illustrator, and it doesn't like the fonts. It seems our client has used some very odd fonts that I don't have, even in our 3000+ font repository. Ugh.

I do not have Acrobat 7, no. The best I've got is 6.0 Pro. <insert mucho cursing here>

Re: PDFs and text

I think 6 also has it. I'm not sure since I skipped it, but Ink Manager doesn't appear under New Features in 7.

Re: PDFs and text

Print to .ps and Distill a new .pdf.  When you go through the print dialog box, choose
Composite Grey in the color output section.  That should cure your ills.

Re: PDFs and text

Well, the 15 page document has been fixed. I was able to get a hold of the people who created it, and they sent me a new PDF. It took me half the day to get a hold of them, but it was worth it.

seetomtype, that would work except the document contains plenty of color that I can't just wipe out. Unless, of course, the printer can take parts of two different PDFs and put them together as one... Hmmm...

I was about to mention this. It would fix your problem in a few clicks.

Talking my boss into that purchase 3 days before I leave for a new job isn't too likely smile

Re: PDFs and text

D'oh. I should have looked harder. The problem's been solved and everything, though. The printer was very helpful. Very.
