University
This year i'm going to be a senoir in High school which only means one thing, Applying to colleges. Fun huh? I live in California but don't have a problem traveling at all, and even though i've been looking through alot of different guides and books I still don't know where i want to go.
Can anyone here recomend their school or any school that sounds interesting/not very well known?
I'm a humanities guy, not math science
edit: I would really like to go to school in england, but i'm not sure how our system meshes with theirs. Does anyone know how I would go about this?

Re: University
Are you looking for a top-tier LAC or something else? Is money an issue? What's your SAT and GPA? There are a lot of factors that go into this.
My favorite "interesting" schools are probably Western State College of Colorado in Gunnison, or Coastal Carolina University. But that is because of their location

depends on what you want to study. humanities doesn't quite narrow it.

Re: University
Writing, journalism, literature
I'm not looking at the top tier and money isn't really an issue, it only would be if I wanted to attend a terrible( i.e parents deemed terrible school) with 40k tuition.
thanks for the replies

Go to a community college for two years until you've figured out where you want to go - you'll save a bunch of money, and have an easier time exploring options.
Some community colleges do have dorms if you don't want to go local.

They are great for people who haven't decided what they want to do yet beyond "humanities"

Re: University
the problem is that in some places (not cali) its not as easy to transfer between a 2 yr and a 4 yr school. Cali makes it very very easy. You cant expect that in another state so it can be a good thing to check on.

It is ini Michigan, but it depends on which university you're transferring to.

Re: University
If you want a really weird liberal arts college, try Deep Springs. Hard to get in, though (not uncommon to get rejected there and accepted at an Ivy/major university). The application process, though, is *VERY* demanding; the first round is 3 essays plus misc. stuff, 2nd round (by invite) is 4 more essays (1500 word limit - I got wait listed there [didn't get in]).
Reed is a fairly out-there place - while there as a prospie, there was a Drag Ball, and a Klingon Death Metal band (totally dressed as Klingons, the head wrinkle thing and all - and sang in Klingon, too). Has kind of a student-run feel to it (the loft in the main hall is called the "Bong Loft").

Eh, I didn't find that to be true, at least with Stanford - they said they'd like it by the 1st of Dec., no later than the 15th. Well, I mailed it off on the 14th, and it seems to have worked. I'd second that advice anyway, though...
Really, though, do some research - I was totally in denial, and really only applied to places that were either suggested to me, or that I'd heard of before. It was kind of luck I got in some place I wanted to go.
Good luck - it can be a nasty process. Keep breathing.

Isn't deep springs like the hardest institution to get into in the world, besides a tech school in India?

Re: University
Depends on the statistic you use. Accepted:Applicants it's (I think) the hardest (under 9%), but that's fairly misleading, as class size is only 13. As far as test scores go, I would suspect MIT, CalTech, etc. to be harder (I got wait-listed at DS, flat out rejected at Harvey Mudd, and accepted at Stanford - go figure).
Yeah, St. John's kicks - my sister goes there (albeit in Santa Fe - they have two campuses [campi?]) - you should certainly give that a look.

umass suckkks. no, really, it does. its a massive state university where you probably won't get a good education. of course if you were to go to boston university, you're education would be first class, and you would join the elite group of macaddict forum posters at bu.

Whatever the calibre JC/CC you go to, you won't, from what I've heard, have the same experience.
