For those of you who do believe, please read on.
I was very close to my great grandfather, like best buddies. He taught me to play pool, we went for ice cream, plaid card games, and just had a great time together. One day he had a stroke, and a week later he died. It was like loosing my best friend. I wasn't there with him when he passed in the middle of the day, I was in school and mourned the loss of such a great guy.
One night I couldn't sleep so I decided to get up and read (I often did this to help me get to sleep, and I still do). When I sat up in bed I looked at the door to the room (bed faced the door) there before me stood smiling, my greatgrandfater. I was stunned. My blood ran cold for a moment, then I remembered to breath. I looked back and he was gone.
After that I felt better about his passing and didn't miss him so much. I felt like that was his way of saying "good bye" or "don't worry I'm fine".
That is the only time I have ever seen a ghost.
It sounds like you were still in a half-dream state (it happens to me pretty often). I have no doubt that your subconscious mind was active at that point in time, and created what your conscious mind wanted to see. Still, the peace of mind it gave you is a great thing.

...Now, considering that you have already confessed to believing in ghosts, that leaves your judgment in this questionable. Not because I think you're loony or anything, but because you come to it with a preconceived notion, so you are more likely to interpret your own observation through that filter. You see a strange light or something in a room, and it becomes a ghost. You exclude the possibility that it could be lights from a passing car or something else. No, it's a ghost to you, even though there is no other evidence to support that.
Couldn't that filter work in two directions?

So Oatmeal what sort of drugs were you on when you "saw" or "heard" your ghost? I just want to verify that they were the same ones I took since we are both delusional.
It has been several years, but I believe I had taken some rather heavy doses of root beer on the night in question. Possibly some nachos and salsa.
It must have been the salsa. Didn't your parents ever teach you about the harmful effects of recreational substances?

Being half awake, I don't know. I just know I had trouble sleeping and was sitting up in bed wanting to reach for a book to read to help me get some sleep. Weather or not it was real is debeatable amongst experts, but I believe it was my grandad. In some ways I still feel as if he is watching over me, but enver saw him again.
I believe there are things out there that no one knows. Science can't always explaine it, no matter how hard you try.

Re: Do you believe in ghosts?
I've told this story here before, but whatever.
One night, a few years back, I was over at my friends house 'till about 3 AM. We were just hanging out, watching TV, and basically trying to freak ourselves out. Ghost stories, anything of the supernatural, whatever we could do. Basically, we were acting like 12 year old girls at a sleepover, minus talking about what boys we liked.
Nothing happened (yet), but it was good creepy fun.
So I drive home and come in through the garage. I step inside my house without turning on any lights, half beucase I'm lazy, and half because... well, I'm just lazy.
Anyway, I step into my darkened house and freeze. I can feel something watching me. Now, I know was just up all night trying to scare myself, but this was clearly different. This was real. Something was there.
I'm looking around the black, trying to see if I can make anything out, but unwilling, or unable, to move to turn on the light.
And standing there, in the quiet, in the dark, I hear a slow, steady breathing. It sounds somewhat pained, like an old man who's smoked too many cigarettes, but it's quiet.
I'm getting more and more freaked out when I notice some movement, only a meter or two from where I am standing. Something is there. All I could make out of it, was a shadowy humanoid figure, but one that stood not more than a foot off the ground. It was looking at me, I could see its eyes, and was slowly swaying back and forth, back and forth, like it was waiting for me to make the first move, all the while continuing it's slow steady breathing, and watching me intently.
Now mind is racing trying to figure out how I can get away from this thing, or how I can defend myself. Now, I'm not in excellent shape, but I used to play soccer and still sometimes do, so I have a good kick. I figured that I could take one step and kick it straight into my living room wall, and that would hopefully disorient it enough for me to get out of the house, or run to the kitchen and grab a knife or something. I don't know, I've never encountered a foot tall shadow-goblin before.
But I had to act before it did.
Suddenly, just before I sprung into action, the thing made its move.
It giggled at me.
So I bent over, picked up my neice, put her back to bed, and then went to bed myself, all the while congratulating myself on keeping my cool and not booting my one year old neice into wall.
