If you can't raise a family on it, it is under-paid.

Reality check: For most families in Mass., in order to be able to raise a family and own a home both parents need to work full time, one job 9 out ten times won't cut it. I think this is true most everywhere in the US nowadays.

In Mass. this is true unless one person is able to earn 100k or more, hopefully more. So if Cyber is pulling in 50k, gets married to someone who is making 50k, he's all set. That's what it takes to be apart of the "American dream" here.

I never meant for this to become a pissing contest.  However, I don't believe that anyone is tech support brings home 50k.

I support my family quite well on just my income, with no college degree.  I realize that I am a bit of an anomaly as far as that goes, and I am grateful that I am able to do so, but still, I believe that one could do much better financially pursuing other endeavors.  But as I said, if he's happy, he's happy, and that's a good thing.

Umm, in Mass Tech Support starts off at $35,000 in Boston... I know some IT persons making $50,000 to over $90,000 it all matters where you get your jobs.

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

I worked in tech support for a medium-sized (~400 employees) company and made more than 50k.  Although I was 'level 3' or something support - the company 'Mac' guy.  Being the Mac expert made me a premium.  Although this was in NYC so I still lived in a studio apartment.

Anyway, compensation varies greatly on location.

Not too different in Mass either. At least when companies are willing to pay for the quality.

No, that wasn't me. That was a scene from teh movie Pirates of the Silicon valley (perhaps I'm misremembering the bare feet confused)

Either way it was Steve Jobseque.

As was said, it's a scene from PoSV and I was mocking his spelling. The scene was about an IBM employee or former employee looking for a job at Apple. Jobs walked in looking like he just came back from the beach with ripped jeans shorts, t-shirt, and slippers, the applicant was your stereotypical IBM employee at the time, rigid, conformist, etc. I don't think that actually happened but it illustrated Jobs' attitude in the office at the time, probably with some exaggeration.

Well then you haven't read the 2nd coming of Steve Jobs... that sounds exactly like something he would do.

Re: I got a job working for Apple!

Apparently, I stand corrected on the pay of tech support people.  I would be willing to bet however, that the average is far less.  Either way, I don't think that it is a job that I could love.  I can't stand stupid people.  I already deal with enough of them in sales.  I couldn't possibly bear working at a place where they routinely call in for help doing regular, mundane tasks.  Make it 100k, and I may consider it.  wink
