Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
I can't believe I'm actually posting this, but Mail.app has locked up on me too many times now in Tiger for me to just write it off as a glitch.
Is this happening to anyone else? Mail.app just locks up on me...at least three times a week...necessitating a force quit.
Safari does it occasionally, but not nearly so much as Mail.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
I used Mail.app in Tiger for about a day. Then I switched to Thunderbird.
This is after using Mail since I got my first Mac running Jaguar.
It is a piece of smurf all around, and quite an ugly one, too.

Elmore, why? I'd consider switching if you had good reasons
Kev...I've never had it crash on me, and I've used Mail since Panther...

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
I've been using Mail for a while and I've found the Tiger version to be everything I've been looking for since OS X was released. Spotlight searching is just icing.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
The only problem I have with Mail (and probably other mail programs) is that I can't easily send from email aliases. Brown University gives me tito@brown, titok16@, and tito_jadsfjaofsa@, and tjadsljaofsa@. To send from those names, I have to have an account for each of those, since they all just forward to one address. Will another app do this?

Mail.app has never been particularly good with large numbers of messages. That's what Entourage is for.
I hope Spotlight compatibility is coming.

blech... i just spent the past hour trying to get thunderbird working for me (just outta curiosity)...
1) could never get it to import my contacts from address book correctly (all formats tried)
2) ran slow as smurf
3) couldn't import any of my prefs or settings from Mail
into the trash it goes!

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
How are you using Mail; IMAP, POP etc.?
The only issues I have with mail are . . .
When receiving HTML messages, it doesn't render as such just shows up text; my boss has the same issue. I think that is due to IMAP though, and I really don't care. Just would like to figure it out if I get a user with the same issue.
The other issue, ever since Tiger Mail the Outbox is not persistently in the mailbox list. Only shows up when something is waiting to send. Not a big deal, but I like to see it there always because I then know for sure it is empty, and everything sent fine.
No crashing here at all. I have used Mail since the PB.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
I think Mail is great, and when I still had AOL a few years back, it was the main reason I gave them to cancel my account(which is really difficult by the way). Now, I don't get all crazy and fancy with Mail, and I run it on a super old slow Mac, and it's fine.
If you look around the table and can't tell who the sucker is, it's you.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
...... what's the point of typing "Mail.app" instead of "Mail"?
Thank you for your co-operation.

Because "mail" could mean anything, not only the program.

Many reasons, but the interface is the primary one.
The aliases issue you mention is also a little easier to work with in Thunderbird.
It handles tons of messages better than Mail or Entourage (currently about 160,000 messages in my various boxes).
It does not have the "disappearing emails" problem, which a lot of people have, including my coworker.
Tbird is far from perfect. It's not very pretty, and the way it handles filters is very quirky, but workable. It also took a lot of effort to import my mail but it is worth it.
Thunderbird > Mail any day.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
Nary an issue with mail for me as well. I think it's actually quite a good app.
Thunderbird for mac gives me the same feelings as firefox does. It feels like a crappy port.
However on windows thunderbird and firefox are unbeatable.
You have an absolutely breath-taking... heiney. I mean, that thing's good. I wanna be friends with it.

How large is 'a large number of messages?'
I've never had a problem with Mail.app and it's handling of a large number of messages. I routinely let my junk box fill to 3000 before emptying it and my inbox is around 1600 right now and I have a few mailbox folders each with a few hundred to a few thousand emails in them.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
Tiger's Mail app works fine for me. I even like the new look, especially the lickable buttons. I'd like to see Safari, iTunes, et al redone in this style.

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
Hrmm. Well, on one hand, I'm glad to see it's not the app itself. On the other hand, I'm a bit embarrassed that I've let my system get to this state. I think I must've hosed the reinstall on my PowerBook after the HD was replaced. Maybe I'll just start over from scratch and try again.
Thanks everyone for your feedback!

Re: Mail.app in Tiger -- P.O.S.?!
Sometimes my mouse just stop clicking. I can move the cursor but even if I click nothing is happening. At first I thought it was Mail.app but I linked the behavior to badly coded Widget ( Do be Do, Simpson Bot).
I had to restart to regain clickability. I find this very annoying as no error message was given but upon restart the dashboard would revert to default settings; indicating that a dashboard widget was the cause. I'm pondering over whether to keep or to trash Dashboard or to stick with widgets coded by Apple and others big outlets.

I can't remember how I got it but right under my subject line I have a pull down menu that lets me choose where I want my email to come from. I have a choice for each email account that I use mail for.
I think this is how you get it - while composing an email there is a little box in the top section that has horizontal lines in it - open it and click customize. From there you should be able to select which fields you want to be shown when composing an email - the accounts drop down is one of them.
