Actually, that's not a bad thing.  Paying off your house is financially not a smart move, as it is the largest tax write-off that you can have.

Also, when you take into consideration that a home is an appreciating asset, you really can't go wrong.

Re: Things dumb people buy

Real Easter bunnies, especially for young children. Taking proper care of a pet rabbit is at least 5 times more work and responsibility than either a dog or a cat. Rabbits are fully mature by 6 months of age at which time they turn into Berzerker Bunny because of the infusion of raging hormones.

So, if the baby Easter bunny is 8 weeks or older when purchased from a pet store (it's illegal to sell a bunny younger than 8 weeks, but that doesn't stop it from happening), then about 4 months later animal rescue organizations are flooded with Easter bunnies that are no longer cute! Worse, of course, are the rabbits who are "set free" to die horrible deaths. House Rabbits have been domesticated for over 3,000 years! They are unable to exist in the "wild".

House Rabbits (pets) cannot interbreed with wild rabbits, i.e., Cottontails and/or Jack Rabbits. Nor can Jack Rabbits (hares) interbreed with Cottontails (rabbits).

Please don't buy a pet rabbit unless you're willing to put forth a major amount of time, effort, energy, and money in properly caring for it. Rabbits are NOT good "starter pets". They don't want to be held and cuddled. They want "four on the floor". They are more independently minded than cats and they will use their razor sharp teeth and nails to remind you should you forget.

Getting a pet rabbit for a young child is just idiotically stupid! Please don't do it.

No, paying off your house can be a wonderful thing. Say you're paying 0 because your house is paid off.  Compare that to 25% of x where x = any number >  0 and represents what you paid on mortgage interest. You're losing 0 on a paid-off house. You're losing .25x on the inerest you pay on your house (assuming a 25% tax rate). And not all houses appreciate. In fact, I think a whole lot of the McMansions are going to depreciate within the next couple of years.

Two things...

1.  25%?  What are you talking about?

2.  If you need the tax break, your home is the best place to look.  The money saved in taxes will more than make up for whatever you lose in interest.

Not for everyone, no.  But if you fit the profile, yes, it can make perfect sense.

For example...

I am leasing two vehicles myself--a 2004 Honda Civic, and a 2005 Honda Pilot EX-L RES (DVD).  I pay a total of $300/mo for both vehicles.  That is including tax.

My money factor is as close to zero as Honda has ever given anyone, and my residuals are high.  Each vehicle only accumulates about 5k miles per year.

I will sell each one at the end of the term, make money off of the sale, and apply the equity toward my next lease.

I have a minimal out-of-pocket expense, I pay very little in interest, and I have two new vehicles.  I am also able to write the payments off on my taxes, which is something that you can not do with a purchase.

Leasing isn't for everyone, but if done right, it makes a lot of sense.

Umm, it's only 'good' because it's there and you need to use it when you're paying interest.
It still isn't better than having the house paid off for total money left over, no write off is really.
The catch is you take the deductions off your income not your tax owed and since tax isn't 100% you lose the balance.
Example, 1,000 deduction for someone in the 33% bracket saves them 330 in taxes but loses them 670 total dollars they would have had if they had not had the expense to start with.

I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs, my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Lifeline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

Yep, Kevs right.

Another stupid thing people do is buy pets from Mall pet stores. They are paying the same or even more than a dog from a qualified breeder and are supporting horrible puppy mill breeders.
Buying dogs and cats in general is stupid because there is already a crisis of overpopulation of dogs and cats and local shelters and animal rescue organizations are full to bursting with wonderful, homeless dogs just waiting for someone to come and love them.
If you have a breed you are particularly interested in do a web search for a rescue organization specific to that breed. In most cases there will be one quite close to you.

Nope.
When dumb people buy dumb things you end up with dumb squared.

your daughter, Ashton Kutcher, and Gwen Stefani represent everything I hate about my generation: The undying love to the hip-hop subculture, $160 jeans, and Trucker hats.

Don't get me wrong though. Gwen Stefani is really hot, Hip-hop is awesome(when done right), and girls in $160 jeans are usually attractive(although a lot of the time they are bitches), I just don't like the way they represent my generation.

on a side note, things that dumb people buy are: Trucker Hats and Ashton Kutcher

Oh, man.  I just had a conversation with a coworker of mine last night - her ex bought her daughter a rabbit.

In particular, she was talking about how it smelled horrible so she gave it a bath, only learning later that you're not supposed to do that.  She says she'll use baby wipes on its feet the next time it gets to smelling like pee again.
