Historically Black Colleges
Last night I was flip'n the channels betwixt larry king dead, and "softball" with chris mathews. chris matthews was "interviewing" some undistinguishable liberal democrat on the campus of a lame "historically" black college( more like hysterically black college). At the same time, larry king was "interviewing" a different liberal democrat that I didn't recognize, as well as some guy who claimed to be a $big-time$ fund raiser for these college$.
I feel it's time to defund these schools, and give the students a chance to get into a more diverse environment. Experts agree that it's unhealthy, sociologically speaking, for students to segregate themselves into homogeneous groups. The data shows that the aggregate GRE scores from these schools are far below the national average, and I tend to believe that this is a result of lacking diversity.

I'm amazed that your vocabulary includes the word "aggregate".

I think that that is the best response that could have possibly been given in this thread.

Again...all things being equal, I can't believe the "mods" here leave this kind of smurf open but close other threads (NUCLEAR thread?) because it was considered to be an "attack" (on Bush, I suppose
).
No moderation would be good...but if you're going to do it, be even in its application.

Re: Historically Black Colleges
Do you plan on posting that in every one of Best Buy's threads?
It seems to me to be possible that a decent discussion could start here. The other thread you keep quoting, as I have said before, really had no where to go. I believe you even agreed with me on that. Drop it already...

That blows my mind, but whatever.

Anyway, I'm sure even you can agree with me that the "Race war" thread was far more deserving of closure than this. If you'll examine the evidence, you'll find my moderation is not one sided. So you got a thread of yours closed, big deal...

It wasn't my thread.
You win...go about your "decent discussion."
*edit* ...and as I've said several times, I'd prefer little to no moderation.

Re: Historically Black Colleges
So you don't see a possible discussion on the effects of diversity or the lack thereof? Or maybe the usefulness of having a historically (insert any race) university?
I like to give pretty much anything a chance. Even if the discussion potential is very slight. Even if it's not there at all, as long as it's somewhat on topic, and doesn't break a rule or isn't flamebait.

If you prefer little to no moderation, why do you keep saying I should close threads?

I find the type of moderation that I've seen, on the whole, to be unnecessary...and the usual smurf that would be closed on other boards (inflammatory racial posts by someone whom I would consider a "troll") are left open.
I'm leaving this discussion here...it was foolish to boost this tripe to begin with...and I'm sure BB loves the attention.
My mistake.

There are many historicaly black colleges here in Georgia.
Even though I an a conservative, I have no problem with local, state and federal assistance programs for someone to recieve a good education so that they might become a successful contributor of society.

I suppose they want to have their cake and eat it too.
I'm going to leave it at that.

I suppose they want to have their cake and eat it too.
Schools that use "quotas" do so voluntarily...do you think that Bush would be backing the student's who are suing Michigan if they were only abiding by a "quota?"
(and AA programs do not really involve "quotas," at all).

Re: Historically Black Colleges
I stopped visiting this forum for a week or so because I was in a good mood and I didn't want to spoil it. Case in point.
A few thoughts here:
1. Comp Buy is showing his usual ignorance and narrow-mindedness. The majority of HBCUs are private, tuition-driven institutions. They can't be "defunded." The public ones continue to exist because of CONSENT DECREES drafted by their state governments in response to discrimination suits brought by the Justice Dept. in the late 1960s. As part of the decree settlements the public HBCUs have open admissions for all state residents, regardless of race, and share academic credits with the white-majority state institutions.
2. There reason why they are called historically black is 1 part history and 99 parts racism. They were founded at a time when blacks did not have equal access to the white colleges in America. Given the financial aid systems in many colleges that are still just short of discriminatory, it is unlikely that HBCUs have outlived their usefulness.
3. HBCUs are generally more affordable than their white counterparts. And they don't have to walk on eggshells over certain courses that white colleges do-- like Afro American Studies.
4. Since their inception, HBCUS have always been open to anyone. In addition, at many of them the children of employees-- including white faculty and staff-- receive free tuition.
5. Many HBCUs have exchange credit programs with Ivy League colleges. Xavier University of La. and Harvard University have jointly operated a Health Careers Summer Study Program since 1972. Xavier matriculates more black students into medical school than any other college in America--including Harvard.
6. Here's a novel thought: Some black students actually PREFER to go to colleges where the majority of students look like them and share their values-- where no one questions their qualifications and where the fraternities don't dress up in blackface and white hoods at Halloween parties and think it's funny.
7. If any of y'all think that HBCUs are discriminatory and have outlived their usefulness, fine. Let's dismantle them-- AFTER we first dismantle women's colleges, Bible colleges, American Indian schools, military academies, and all the other schools in America that admit students based on narrow demographic profiles and have been in operation for much longer than HBCUs.
Best Buy, your trolling nature is well known. At least give us something substantive to debate.

Re: Historically Black Colleges
The only danger with H.Black.Cs are if race were to become the only thing that matters. But to my knowledge these colleges are viable learning places that accept members of all races (Marcus Jacoby, Southern right?) and produce plenty of good graduates.
I go to a small private college on a pristine campus with all the amenities and dreams one could wish for...oh yeah, its like 98% white/asian. No one has attacked us or taken away our grants for being too white, and I don't want them too.
Best Buy also points out that GRE scores are lower at HBC(U) than the national average--but, and please correct me if I'm wrong, isn't the GRE level on par with other schools when you equalize admission standards. Grambling isn't the hardest place to get into, neither is Ferris State (mostly white) or Pensacola Christian. They all have GRE scores below the middle. But that does not instantly mean that these colleges are "bad" places that need to be put in the blender (although, PCC scares me).
If we attack black colleges then we have to attack every college with the slightest fault. (and yes, I would say the same thing if a bible or military college was under fire).
Not everplace can be Boston College, not everyplace should be.
