Look who says the Iraq war was about oil

Alan Greenspan says it's all about the black stuff

In his long-awaited memoir, to be published tomorrow, Greenspan, a Republican whose 18-year tenure as head of the US Federal Reserve was widely admired, will also deliver a stinging critique of President George W Bush’s economic policies.

However, it is his view on the motive for the 2003 Iraq invasion that is likely to provoke the most controversy. “I am saddened that it is politically inconvenient to acknowledge what everyone knows: the Iraq war is largely about oil,” he says.

Greenspan, 81, is understood to believe that Saddam Hussein posed a threat to the security of oil supplies in the Middle East.

Juicy.

Not really. For those who think it was about oil, its just someone else's opinion to throw into the mix. For those who think oil had nothing to do with it, its easy to dismiss the opinion of one more person.

I could bore you with a philosophical tirade about freedom and tyranny, or try and explain to you what new horizons are suddenly open to me, but I doubt you would understand and if you did it might frighten you.  That amuses me.

Re: Look who says the Iraq war was about oil

Actually, I don't think it's about oil either.   The real reason Iraq happened was that G.W. had ALWAYS planned to go in and get rid of Saddam.  911 was a pesky inconvienience that got in his way temporarily.   Bush needed to make some kind of connection between 911 and Saddam so he could continue what he had planned all along.

G.W. Bush wrote:

I'm going after the man that tried to kill my daddy.

That is a verbatim quote made by this dork at a Houston fundraiser just months before the start of the war.

Knowing how this bumpkin thinks....  I think it really is the reason we are there.

It's the like the Hatfields vs. McCoys played out in the 21st Century by a man who believes he was directed by God to go to Iraq.

For it to be about Oil, it would mean that he would have to have put thought to this.  Sorry this guy can't think his way out of a grade school debate about fish sticks!

The oil part is what made it possible to convince his corporate owners that Iraq was a good idea.
Bush did have a personal motive but he can't do anything without his Masters permission.

Greenspan was supposedly in-the-loop, so his saying this demonstrates that the "Saddam is planning to attack us with WMDs" justification of the invasion was a lie.

I think Pariah kind of nailed it -- institutionally, the oil was key.

I'm not so sure about the "he tried to kill mah daddy" motive, tho. Sure that played a role, but I think religion played a bigger role.

It's a Jihad.

I agree. In the end though, Bush's motives aren't what matters as he is just a stupid puppet.

Re: Look who says the Iraq war was about oil

We all know all of this already. Why is this news ? Because Greenspan is saying it ?

Considering that Greenspan was the head of the Fed. Which is probably the most detrimental corporation this country has ever imposed upon itself I really can't give him any credit for getting all righteous now. He's just selling books.

Re: Look who says the Iraq war was about oil

I wonder if Mr. Greenspan will say anything about the enormous credit bubble he helped create, by keeping rates way too low for too long.

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

He already did.

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan acknowledges he failed to see early on that an explosion of mortgages to people with questionable credit histories could pose a danger to the economy.
In an upcoming interview, Greenspan said he was aware of "subprime" lending practices where homebuyers got very low initial rates only to see them later jacked up, causing severe payment shock. But he said he didn't initially realize the harm they could do.
"While I was aware a lot of these practices were going on, I had no notion of how significant they had become until very late," he said in a CBS "60 Minutes" interview to be broadcast Sunday. "I really didn't get it until very late in 2005 and 2006," Greenspan said.

Meaning he underestimated the extent of the impact but he knew it wasn't good policy.

It would seem his accusation is that Greenspan has crafted his memoirs in such a way as to generate controversy and thereby boost sales. Said accusation being based on absolutely no evidence whatsoever.

Re: Look who says the Iraq war was about oil

An added wrinklw the defense secretary has issued a nondenial denial

Appearing on ABC's "This Week," Gates said, "I have a lot of respect for Mr. Greenspan." But he disagreed with his comment about oil being a leading motivating factor in the war.

"I wasn't here for the decision-making process that initiated it, that started the war," Gates said. But he added, "I know the same allegation was made about the Gulf War in 1991, and I just don't believe it's true."

"I think that it's really about stability in the Gulf. It's about rogue regimes trying to develop weapons of mass destruction. It's about aggressive dictators," Gates said.

"After all, Saddam Hussein launched wars against several of his neighbors," Gates said. "He was trying to develop weapons of mass destruction, certainly when we went in, in 1991."

Tapdancing around the obvious can't be easy.

The Publisher !

My accusation is that the publisher chose specific excerpts from the book to sell the book. At a time when the excerpt actually relates to what's going on in society. Controversy sells books. He milking the war just like everyone else.

No evidence ? You posted the evidence and are falling right into the trap of talking it up. There's nothing juicy about what is obvious. Don't be such sheep....
