DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
I never touch DVD studio Pro. I can create really basic DVDs, menu, chapters, slide shows.
Anyhow, I've created a DVD intro movie and after the intro plays for a few seconds, I'd like the menu options to appear with the animated background. However, I'm unable to create a damn menu that functions as so.
I could splice the video, but it'd create a rough cut as it skipped from video to DVD menu cause the music to stutter which is 100% undesirable. Anyone know how?

In the Menu inspector, you should be able to set the start of the menu loop, which is the point at which menu buttons will appear when the DVD plays.

Re: DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
When I was testing, the loop point didn't spawn in the buttons. They appeared the minute the video started, looking glaringly out of place
However.... I did find this:
http://dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=102394
And combined with the documentation, I was able to figure it out all out. Its a really wayward process, but essentially you create a subtitle track. Force it to be always visible. Drop a full screen graphic, in four shades, then create the overlays, and button zones over video, then select color matching for the specified shades (which doesn't work as neatly as one would hope). It took me awhile to get the shades to work properly. In order to make subtitle graphics buttonable, you have to create a button marker. Also notable, you can only have one track visible at a time thus one graphic for all the buttons on the screen. Your overlays become a little more space limited.
Its not an actual menu at this point so I'll still have to create a menu which I can just script to divert back to the intro movie at the chapter point when the video starts.
I suppose I really should force myself to really get DVD Studio Pro down... When I was at UO, there was a course in it but it was from 6-9, and during that term I already had 12-6 classes during the days it was offered. I think 9 hours of straight class in the same room would have tested sanity.

That's a crazy process. Here's what I do, I don't know why it doesn't work for you. Here's a quick video I captured of the process:
http://www.digitaldroo.com/tutes/menuloop.mov
Standard Menu Process:
1. Import movie to be used as the background
2. Import overlay graphic to use as the buttons
3. From the bin, drag the movie into the Menu window as a "background"
4. From the bin, drag the overlay into the Menu window as an "overlay"
5. Create the buttons in the Menu Window
6. Set Button Colors
To set the loops points for the menu (and the buttons)
7. With the background selected, go into the Inspector and set the start loop point
8. Check to see that the menu is the First Play
9. Build and simulate
What results is a movie that starts playing, then when it hits the start loop point, the buttons appear.

Hmmm, this will be good to know for a project I have in the works right now... thanks Droo.

Thanks Droo, after I built it, it worked.
However, new question: can transitions have audio?

I doubt the ones generated by DVDSP can, but you can create custom transitions using whatever video app you use. It's nothing more than a video/audio track in between 2 menus.

Re: DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
Probably should have been more specific. I've created a video track, assigned it as a transition. It works, except the audio doesn't play. I can't find in the documentation if this is a limitation or an error. Seriously I appreciate the help. None of my friends use DVD Studio Pro and I'm generally the guy they ask for help with stuff like this.

To be honest, I don't know how to "assign transitions," per se. I actually never use the transitions feature in the app. What I do is set it up so that when the user activates an option, the transition video is played (as if it were a normal video track--no different than, say, the feature presentation), then have that video lead to the target menu.
Play Main MENU->(press button)->Play Transition TRACK->Play Next MENU

Re: DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
I should mention that I started out on DVD Studio Pro v.1, where there were hardly any features, aside from assembling and routing assets and building DVD files. As such, my methods are probably oldskool. Whatever I'm doing, there are probably easier ways to do it. Sometimes, though, staying with the basics avoids headaches.

Re: DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
Well assigning transitions as mentioned basically plays a video file between the menu and track. So you create a video track, place whatever in it, and then assign it as a transition on a button. When button is pressed, it plays that interium video and then goes to the said video track. However it doesn't seem to play the audio which seems odd. I'll try using a PCM audio track.

Re: DVD studio Pro:Create menu buttons that appear after X amount of time?
Well the work around to have audio during transitions was to simply divert the menu to the clip, then have the clip just go to desired segment. As clever way to spare the user of watching the whole DVD intro for the menu (its only a few seconds) I just created a second menu as the main disk menu near the loop point. Things are coming together now.
I wonder if DVD studio can handled combined MPEGs for video. TMPencoder I guess will spit those out. That may be the way to cause audio to play during a "Transition". Either way, the method I'm using method works just as easily.
