University of Florida student tazered

First let me say if there's already a thread for this open then go ahead and lock this one but I didn't see one.

I'm sure a lot of you have already seen this, if you havent it's mildly nsfw so careful where you watch it.  Long story short, a kid gets handcuffed and tazered for asking some tough questions to John Kerry.  I can't agree with his initial reaction to being forcibly removed from the room (if he'd cooperated with the police there wouldn't have been an issue) and his tone was riddled with sarcasm but I also simply cannot defend the actions of the police.

What were your thoughts about this?

Re: University of Florida student tazered

Tough questions? About Skull and Bones?

The kid apparently didnt sign and register to get in, from what I heard, so he was trailed in by security. But the stuff that bugs me is Kerry is answering and they try to muscle him out anyway, and when the kid broke free of the grasp (with his hands up, as if  to indicate he wasnt trying to do anything wrong) they decide to arrest him. For asking a freaking question. On Constitution day. That is really sad. I hate cops.

On the other hand, the Dane Cook-like plea "dont taze me bro" was reason enough to electrocute him to near death.

They tasered one of the stars of my school's basketball team this weekend, because he was drunk and pulled a cops' gun. I'd say that he's lucky they didn't shoot him.

Also, where is our roving conspiracy theorist? Did you notice how it was only after the mention of "Skull and Bones" that the cops moved in?

Gotta keep those Discordians in check !

Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim.  Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet."  They did so, and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew.

I understand that after he is hung, he will be drawn, and then quartered, and parts of him will be posted at each enterance to the university.

A fitting end to such a sorry spectacle.

He broke away from the police what, three times before they hit him with the juice?
You shouldn't expect to repeatedly, actively resist arrest and continue moving towards a U.S. Senator without the police doing something to drop your ass.
Which makes me think he was trying to get beat down or tased, to become a YouTube spectacle and example of the brutality of The Man.

Re: University of Florida student tazered

I agree somewhat with Tallgeese partly, but he wasn't moving toward Kerry at the beginning. He was just asking (rather annoyingly) a question, and the police moved in on him.

And besides that, why in the hell did they taze him after that crapload of cops had him on the ground. There was no way in hell he was going to get out of there, but they tazed him anyway? WTF.

The whole situation was bullcrap, and the kid and the cops should be ashamed.

Re: University of Florida student tazered

We don't know how he acted before the video started, we don't know what the rules were for conduct at this speaking event, so we really don't know if the cops legitimately had a reason to remove him.

Why did they taze him? He was still physically resisting. Even after the cops had him on the ground, he was flailing and struggling.

Thats crap though. Suppose he had a serious point, suppose instead this kid was in a demonstration against segregation or some "legitimate" use of free speech. The cops try to remove him by force for asking a question. He felt they had no right because all he was doing was asking a question. He tries to simply break free from them touching him and restraining him and thats when the cops decide to arrest him. Again, the person feels this is a violation of his civil liberties, and protests the arrest. He gets wrestled to the ground. He keeps crying "I'll walk away peacefully, just leave me alone" They taser him.

And he wasnt moving towards the senator, he was moving away from the cops.

Re: University of Florida student tazered

I guess there's a good lesson to be learned from this:

Even if you believe they're in the wrong, resisting the police is never a good idea.  There are tons of videos of alleged "police brutality" on the internet (often involved kids skateboarding) and I'd say the vast majority of the situations could have been resolved peacefully if the person being arrested had simply cooperated.

Re: University of Florida student tazered

Despite the  early 20's passion and lack of composure, I don't think he deserved to be yanked away by a ton of cops. Kerry was willing to answer those questions and Kerry asked the cops to leave the kid alone.

IMHO both parties acted in a fairly idiotic manner.

Re: University of Florida student tazered

The AP reported police are recommending he be charged with resisting arrest with violence which is a felony, as well as some misdemeanor like disturbing the peace or disrupting a public function or something.  While it's clear from those videos that he's resisting arrest, I don't think you could call it "violent," at least not by my definition (which would be him taking swings at the cops or something).  AFAIK he hasn't been officially charged with anything yet and the president of U of F has initiated an investigation into it.  It'll be interesting to see how far they prosecute this kid. shrug

edit: my bad he has already been charged with Disrupting a public event.  The investigation the University initiated will also look at whether the police used undue force.

I will never cease to be amazed by the sheer number of people who are quite content with, or purposely ignorant of, this paramilitary invasion of our country from within.
