233 G3 iMac
I got an original 233 MHZ G3 iMac (first model I think). Is running OS X on this model practical? Or is it gonna be slow like molasses?
Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Does it have over 4 GB of disk space ? What about RAM ?

Re: 233 G3 iMac
I ran 10.3 on 300MHz iBook and it wasn't unbearably slow. There are a few guides floating around the net for optimizing OS X for older G3s. Heres a good one. Also be sure to have at least 256MB of RAM since OS X is RAM hungry. Just don't expect to do anything beyond iTunes, Word, and web browsing on it.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
Right now it has a 4 GB drive and 32 MB RAM. But I have 2 spare 64 MB SO-DIMMs — so 128 MB total.
I could also put in a larger HD maybe a 10 — 40 GB HD. But even if I do those things it's still gonna crawl with a1998 graphics chip and at 233 MHZ, right? Is there any point?
BTW, I run 10.3.9 OK on a 2000 PB G3, but it's @ 400 MHZ with better internal system specs overall.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
Speed is relative to what you are used to.
You can get by OS 10.2 or 10.3 with 128MB of RAM and a 4 GB hard drive in an iMac 233. It will be slow but usable. Barely.....
But you should really use 256MB or more RAM. You can also swap the CPU with a 266MHz or 33MHz iMac CPU and that will help.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
I figured adding more RAM and larger HD would help; those things I can do easily. I have run X fairly well on 256 MB of RAM (for basic stuff) and I don't want to pour money into it with CPU upgrades. I haven't really used X on anything less than a 400 MHZ G3 (and no higher than Panther) so I was concerned about the 233 MHZ CPU (and older graphics and system bus). I'm not using it myself. I'm thinking of turning it into a child's/student's computer and whether it would be good enough as a starter system.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
You don't need to spend much for a CPU. The original iMac CPUs will pop right in yours and you can find a 333MHz from another iMac for less than $20 pretty easy anymore. I think I paid $10 for the last one 333MHz iMac CPU I bought. Luckily there are lots of dead analog boards in iMacs and the CPU's are fairly common.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
I ran 10.3 on a G3266 and it ran surprisingly well, but I had 640 meg of ram. Ram makes a HUGE difference with OSX.
I would be reluctant to spend any cash on an iMac of that vintage, frankly I wouldn't take one as a gift at this point. It's just way too far behind the curve.
But if you just want a fun project, pokeing around for cheap parts and all why not? But the first step towards OSX would be to max out the ram. I think you can put 512 in now.
But keep in mind the 400 to 600mhz iMacs have been showing up in Craig's list for less than $150 so mind your expenditures.

Re: 233 G3 iMac
I ran OS X 10.2 on a BondiBlue iMac 233.
It was SLOW, And I had 160 MB RAM (at the time, most I could max it out as.)
It's a collector's piece. Put in your shelf, and have your computer savvy friends say "ooohhhh" when they see it.
I wish I had mine back.
Mac Pro 2.66 ghz Quad Core - 9 GB RAM - Mac OS X 10.6.2 & 10.5.8
MacBook Pro 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 Duo - 4 GB RAM - Mac OS X 10.6.2
G4 MDD Dual 1.25 ghz - 2 GB RAM - Mac OS X 10.5.8

Re: 233 G3 iMac
I have a 233Mhz iMac Rev. A. I put in a G4/400Mhz card, 512Mb of RAM and an 80Gb 7200 Rpm HD, as well boosted the VRAM to a whopping 6Mb with a 4Mb chip and a ASUS wireless ethernet adapter...Running OS 10.4.10 and OS9.2.2...Runs O.k. not setting the world on fire but it's great for friends when they come over or my 9yr old son to surf the web, listen to music etc.....
My 2 cents...

WOW, that's really exceeding the value of what it's worth with upgrades by a factor of what, 10-1? (I see first generation iMacs at thrift stores for $25 - $50 all the time). Of course it's the enjoyment of the challenge of making it road worthy again, too.

Yeah, to each his or her own. I got the machine for free for doing some upgrades to a friends G4 iMac. When I got it the HD was corrupt and wouldn't boot. I just started fiddlin' with it and ended up with what I got now. I guess I have about $300 bucks in it now. I use it to loan out to friends and family so it does get used and abused quite a bit. When it's not on loan, I use it in my living room (along with a "Paris" ibook G3) for surfing the web while watching TV. You know see that uber cool commercial and gotta check out the website before I forget....
What PC can do that? It's almost 10yrs old and is..er..was running the most up to date OS...Try running Vista on a PC built 10yrs ago

Re: 233 G3 iMac
One of the best upgrades back in the day for those original iMacs was the old Micro Conversions Voodoo 2 upgrade boards. Probably impossible to find nowdays. Won't work in OSX but for OS9 stuff it would give you a halfway decent GPU for a few things. I still got my working MC Voodoo 2 12MB from my Beige G3, don't think i'd ever sell it. Its a great board for a OS9 Mac and I never know when i'll get another Beige box to fix up.
