I gotta hacksaw the handles off a Mac Pro. Anybody do this?

I know at some point there have been some kind of instructions on the net, and I'm sure I don't need them after some long thinking, but it'd be great to read up on the prep work before cutting off the handles that make this tower too damn big to fit in a road case.

OK I'll be back with pics with the handles off.

I don't think my conscience would let me take a hacksaw anywhere near a Mac Pro.....but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Let us know how it turned out.

Hahaha..yeah.  If I could afford a Mac Pro, I'd have to castrate myself for taking a saw near it.  But, if that's what has to be done to get it to fit.....lol.

couldn't you build a bigger road case for it? and why must it fit into a road case in the first place? perhaps there is a better way.

Ah, your optimism! Smaller roadcase = less pains over long timeframes, meaning, the damn thing is too damn tall! Anyway, as promised:

A little part of me died.  I like how you left the hack saw on top of it for the one picture...like when the murder weapon is left behind.

I already have a G5 PowerMac in a road case and after all this time it's pretty disappointing that its size with the handles wastes space. If it had its handles sawed off I could get another 2U piece of necessary gear in that case.

It is your computer and you should do as you want. But a hacksaw and a bastard file seem rather crude tools for the job. If you can finish it cleanly I don't see anything wrong. Even if you leave it with the blacksmith quality finish I guess that is your business. It would seem kinda hill-billy though.

Dude, it's just a metal case. What kind of weird fancy hoops would you be jumping through to get the handles off? The point is to get it to do stuff and do work, not sparkle or win some kind of custom fabrication awards. All that aside, if I was a blacksmith, I'd do it up I'm sure. Or not, if it took too much time and effort, like removing all the innards. Thanks for the cute mac worship post though!

Yeah, I don't think Digidesign HD rigs are qualified to run on Xserve, or if they are, there has to be a reason why nobody is doing it.

I thought I said it was your computer and you should do what you want. I don't have any problem with taking the handles off. Truth be told, I think it looks cleaner that way. I was just saying it looks like a work in progress in the pictures you posted. If it is does what you need the way it is then it looks right. I'm all about the Bauhaus, baby.

I was thinking, maybe drill a hole in each bottom corner and really put training wheels on it, otherwise those sharp corners are deadly. When I posted the pics I didn't know just how funny they were.

And hot.

And despite their apparent sleek design, they are huge. I don't think you'll find many an audio rack that they won't stick out the back of quite a bit.

And you forgot, heavy as sin.

But yeah.

Also, it didn't occur to me before, but I think the OP just kissed his resale value goodbye.

Idunno, an empty shell wouldn't be hard to come by, and probably be had for less than the increase in resale value it'd represent.
