I just got firefox for my mac and I want to get rid of the firefox icon from my desktop when ever I try to put in trash the can becomes a eject button

When you download applications you need to drag them from the installer to the Applications folder. Then close the disk image created by the installer and put it in the trash.
Then you can run the app from your applications folder or drag it to the dock and run it from there.
A disk image (the thing you clicked on on your desktop after you downloaded it) functions kind of like it's own little hard drive and has to be mounted and ejected. It is really just a way to get files from one machine to another in a neat little package but you want to transfer the files to the proper location on your drive to use them.

I'm having the same problem. Even after moving it to the Applications folder and draging the icon to the trash. As soon as I open Firefox the icon reappears.

Try this.
go to Applications folder. Ensure that the FireFox app does NOT have a little curved arrow at the left bottom. If it does, then you have not copied the program to the Applications folder.
Eject the .dmg file and put the file in the trash.
From the Applications folder, Double-click on the Fire Fox app.
I'm not dead yet.

Oh, God! This reminds me of my friend who ran Firefox from it's .dmg for months before I fixed it for him.
The first time he asked me to look at one of his Macs (many years ago, pre-OS X) because it was brand new and running really slow. I found that he had copied 3 complete installations of Photoshop to various parts of his computer because he wanted to be able to open it without navigating to his Applications folder.
