Re: That's Reverend SpacemanSpiff

Congrats up

I was ordained by the ULC in 2000, so yes, I am Reverend Kosh.   I didn't originally become ordained to perform a marriage or even to piss anyone off.  A few years ago, one of my friends was considering getting married, and wanted me to perform the ceremony, but the marriage ended up never happening, so I have yet to use my "ministerial powers".  http://homepage.mac.com/oatmeal/MAF/maxes/winkkosh.gif

The laws do vary state-to-state (and in different countries), with some states requiring you to register in your county or state before being "authorized" to perform marriage ceremonies, others not pre-requiring anything, and yet others seeming to be in flux.  In any case, it is a good idea to find out what you need to do, since at a minimum, you need to file the marriage certificate to make it legal.

The WA laws are pretty lax.  So we are 'good to go' if you will.

I still think the whole experience is one that I will cherish for a long, long time.

...And I found out that "everyone" thought I did a real good job. Woo Hoo!

I was ordained by the ULC right after they started up back in the early 70's. I wonder if I am still in good standing?

Did you see their ad in the back of Rolling Stone, or some other means? smile

You should be.  Do you still have your original ordination certificate?  It shouldn't matter, but if they don't have records from back that far in the current computerized database (and you care), you should be able to tell them your info.

I am pretty sure I got the address of the ULC out Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book. Thats a counter culture guide and handbook with some good terrorism tips included.

Cool.  A terrorism mention in my thread.  Awesome!

But, alas, I only use my counter culture powers for good....

More than likely that's a hold-over from the Quakers (International Society Of Friends.) Quaker marriage ceremonies are by consensus of the meeting. There is no traditional clergy. The group is the clergy. Although there are some more evangelical Quaker meetings with a lay clergy. More so in the western states I believe.

Re: That's Reverend SpacemanSpiff

My Dad is a ULC ordained reverend. He married my wife and I, two of my brothers and their wives and two of my best friends.

He regularly performs ceremonies for people around Wisconsin and I think once in Michigan. Mostly the wedding "jobs" he gets are referrals from people who he has performed ceremonies for. He would like to do it for free, but with the price of fuel he has had to ask for specific mileage. He also asks for a donation, but I know of plenty of people he's married gratis (aside from his kids.)

He likes to perform non-traditional ceremonies. I know he performed a Viking ceremony that a couple requested. He did a bit of research on that one. I would have loved to go to that one! What tux goes with a horned helmet? confused

I'd think not - you don't owe alimony any more.

It was enacted for the Quakers but they have to make it available for anyone regardless of their religion. There was a dust-up recently where an overzealous County employee tried to forbid self-marriage licenses to non-Quakers.

That has two answers. Firstly how could you be in good standing Pariah? Considering it's you we are talking about.

Though if you can stand without falling down, I guess you qualify as in good standing.

Well, that would make sense. If you allow one religion to marry that way, then you must allow others. It would be like saying we recognize marriages performed by Cathokics, Jews, Methodists, etc. But not Baptists.

I would question your wording that the law was passed for the Quakers, as it was the Quakers that founded Pennsylvania and may have passed their own laws. Of course I could be wrong as I haven't delved to deeply into it.
