What was the name of the MAC only website where you could meet people?
It was a website sorta like AOL but you can post, meet people. It looked like a globe with houses and links on the globe.

Long since closed down; and really wasn't a web site, per se.
I miss it, though.

Re: What was the name of the MAC only website where you could meet people?
I thought eWorld was great!
It was a dial up service, like AOL, and was not connected to the rest of the Internet (or the "Information Superhighway," as some people grandiosely termed it back in the mid 90s).
It started in 1994, and I thought it was a pretty big deal at the time. I think I had a 14.4 modem connected to my Performa 600, so everything took a looooong time to load. Very pricey per-minute access fees and low membership assured its demise, closing down in 1996 not with a bang, alas, but a wimper.
I remember it fondly, though. It had a great user interface, very friendly. I remember Apple finally offered software to allow you to "ramp on" to the Internet at large; I sent away for my free floppy disk, but never got it. The service was killed not long after.
Someone came up with the clever "Its The End Of eWorld As We Know It" phrase as the final minutes ticked away.

Also, it's Mac. Short for Macintosh. Liek Win2k instead of Windows 2000.
It's not an acronym like PC.
Some people get really excited about that.

There's an interesting Web page that simulates those eWorld days of yore (click on the "See you in eWorld... The Walkthrough" link):

For an even better, more true-to-life Mac/eWorld experience, go here:

It's pretty cool (if you like old-school).

Or just buy an old Mac. It's not like they're costing an arm and a lag, and you get the real thing, that way.

Yeah, I'd like to get my hands on a classic all-in-one Mac (such as a Mac SE/30). You can find 'em on eBay, but the shipping costs are usually more than the worth of the Mac.

So?
They're heavy. All this hate for shipping charges, I don't get it. Moving things costs money. It's part of the overall price.
Try craigslist and find a local seller if you want.

Right, so I'm looking for an old Mac locally. It makes better economic sense, and I can test it out before I buy. Craigslist is a very good option, but so far I haven't found one. Half the fun (for me anyway) is the thrill of the hunt!

Re: What was the name of the MAC only website where you could meet people?
I remember eWorld very well, I was a host on it for a year and a half. Never forget the night Apple pulled the plug -- 50,000 eWorlders on at the same time, you couldn't read anything in those rooms it moved by so fast! Who was I then, JimCCC.
Apple helped the Hosts to take eWorld on the Internet as TalkCity.com, which was free to members. When Apple pulled the plug on eWorld we went straight to TalkCity.com and kept on talking at midnight PST. It took some time to get TC going, we did it with InfoChats with Mac suppliers and their engineers, talking with users about up-coming products...and it grew and grew. TalkCity is no more either.
People change, the world changes, and people move on to next great thing.
It was too late for eWorld to catch up with AOL, it was exactly the right time for TalkCity.com, and then it was over 5 years later.

You shouldn't take it personally, just because the good old days were before you were born...
