UT3 Demo Soon
Mark Rein wrote:
Folks,
Just wanted to give you a heads' up that we're getting pretty close to releasing the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo for Windows. The Beta Demo will allow instant action play against bots as well as online multiplayer. The purpose of the Beta Demo is to test the game on a large variety of hardware configurations and get gameplay feedback from the community. The development team feels they're pretty close to being ready to release this so it could come out this week but for safety sake I'd say it should be out within two weeks.
We have a few fan sites in tomorrow to play the full game and I'm sure they'll be sharing their comments pretty soon afterward.

Re: UT3 Demo Soon
Offical word from Midway via email:
Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo Available Today on Fileplanet at 3 PM ET
Midway and Epic Games announce that the beta demo for Unreal Tournament 3, the highly anticipated first-person-shooter, will be available for download today via http://www.fileplanet.com at 3 PM ET. The beta demo consists of three different action-packed Deathmatch and Vehicle Capture the Flag maps: HeatRay, ShangriLa and Suspense. All maps in the demo can be played locally against bots, or online against human opponents. Unreal Tournament 3 is currently slated to ship in November for PC. Get ready to get your frag on!
HeatRay (Deathmatch):
This battle takes place in a night-time urban setting. Players battle over who gets to use a Dark Walker super weapon after it is spawned by a passing drop-ship. If you manage to get it, be sure to rack up the kills quickly since everyone will be gunning for you. The Dark Walker is like a giant piñata -- when it dies it drops a U-Damage and a Berzerk power-up. If you want to stay hidden from the Dark Walker keep an eye out for the Invisibility power-up.
ShangriLa (Deathmatch):Â
A stark contrast to HeatRay's moody setting, ShangriLa is a sunny, tranquil map set high in the Izanagi Mountains. This map is designed in the traditional style of big Team Deathmatch maps, so it should please the most hardcore UT Deathmatch players. Fight over the U-damage in the central courtyard, or try to control the Shield-belt alley. You can find jumpboots in a vulnerable spot at the end of a dock, but the risk is worth the reward as they will go a long way toward helping you control the map.
Suspense (Vehicle Capture the Flag):Â
Set on a massive suspension bridge deep in Axon territory, this map is a playground of gameplay possibilities. It's a favorite in Epic office playtests because you can find almost all the Axon vehicles, as well as the Redeemer super-weapon. Whether you are sniping from the bridge towers, camping with the tank, towing hover-boarding flag-runners from your Raptor, controlling the redeemer from underneath the bridge, bombarding from afar with Hellfire SPMA artillery, or doing fast attacks with Manta's and Scorpions, everyone will find something they love doing in Suspense.
Unreal Tournament 3 marks the return of the world's premiere first-person shooter to the PC, and its debut on the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system. Unreal Tournament 3 unleashes the full power of Unreal Engine 3, taking graphics, gameplay, and challenge to a whole new level. Players engage in intense battles with other human players online, or against Unreal artificial intelligence that sets the industry standard. With the most powerful futuristic weapons and vehicles available, this is FPS action at its best!

Re: UT3 Demo Soon
Alright, so it runs decently on my iMac (24" 2.8 GHz C2D, 2 gigs ram, Radeon 2600 Pro 256 MB under Vista) at medium settings (1280x768, texture and geometry sliders at 3, screen draw at 100%).
I'm averaging about 35-40 fps on VCTF; kind of slow, but pretty playable considering the eye candy.
I'm really enjoying the hoverboard so far, and all the little tricks you can do with it like grappling and using it to cushion your landing.
Too bad you can't pick stuff up while on it

Re: UT3 Demo Soon
Couple problems I've noticed:
It doesn't want to save any of my video settings.
I quit and relaunch and everything is back to defaults; just really annoying having to change it all back constantly.
Also it seems REALLY lagged on multiplayer; servers with a ping of 150 feel more like 400.
But that just might be my connection.
I'm playing under "Nellisoft" if anybody wants to join me.

Coming, but I doubt imminently. Maybe a demo after the PC version ships.
May need to wait on 10.5 for better OpenGL anyway.

You're not alone. Current fix is to manual set the ini. Also make sure you're on the ATI Cat 7.9 or better for the 2600.

Well I'm kind of Disappointed with the demo... It just seems like it should just be an expansion set for UT2k4 that require higher hardware requirements. Whats new!!!

I just downloaded it and set everything to max settings. It looks pretty good, but like GoW I think the color palette is too muted.

Re: UT3 Demo Soon
Sweeney recommends stuff for your UE3 upgrade needs.
WITH BOTH G92 and RV670 coming out in different variations (256, 512 and overclocked 1GB SKUs) during November, we wanted to hear what is the engine guru behind Unreal Engine 3 going to say.
Two major titles from Epic are coming out now, Gears of War for PC and Unreal Tournament 3, mega-titles that are also going to be on market in November. When asked about the amount of video memory, here is what Tim stated:
"In Unreal Tournament 3 and Gears of War for PC, there is a significant gain in having 512MB of video memory rather than 256MB. So, first and foremost, get at least a 512MB card if you can afford it. If you haven’t maxed out your budget, then go for the maximum single-card performance that doesn’t require extreme cooling, e.g. buy an entry-level GeForce 8800 over a GeForce 8600."
As you can read for yourself, if an entry-level 8800 is your thing, skimp the 199-something card and just shell out additional 50 somethings for a 512MB card. In Blighty, 512MB board should cost 149 quids (yes, getting ripped off all over again), so this is the card Tim wholeheartedly reccomends as "at least". However, with several partners coming down the line with 1GB cards, know that UE3 engine will more than welcome more memory. We guess this puts the whole idea by some engineers about "what's the use of 1GB memory with 256-bit interface" to rest. Yes, it is worthawhile. Nuff' said.
"Are you broke yet? If not, then [..]
...then go read the rest.

Re: UT3 Demo Soon
Performance- a bit surprising.
Perhaps the most surprising thing was the overall level of performance. Whereas many gamers and hardware geeks were expecting skull-crushingly low framerates out of the game, the 8800 GTX is able to play at 2560x1600 and maintain a 60FPS speed - a massively impressive feat given that the engine runs on the Xbox 360 in 1280x720 at that pace. Even the 8600 GTS and 2600 XT could manage to push out a decent image quality at 1600x1200. Perhaps this is just an indication of the fact that this engine has been in development since the GeForce 6-series was bleeding edge.
However, if there's a downside to all this performance, it's that the game has no support for anti-aliasing. Not in hardware, not even on ATI cards. The Xbox 360 has a dedicated bit of hardware to add AA, but PC gamers are slightly stiffed here. But given the higher resolution, perhaps things aren't all that bad. µ
Another testing note -- antialiasing was not running for any of these tests. Just like the previous UT3 engine games we have tested (Rainbow Six: Vegas and Bioshock) the game does not have any options for AA and forcing on AA at the control panel resulted in no image quality differences. As for future AA support, I am told that by the second demo release and the retail release, Epic should have a patch out for the Unreal Engine 3 that will enable AA support across the board. Let's hope so -- missing such a standard feature in an engine like this is just crazy!
http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/ … -smackdown
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=46 … ype=expert
All this dev time and framerates are good, but even now, no FSAA even under DX10/ Vista, needs a patch? Yikes. And what's 'across the board?' Sweeney's said all along that FSAA would be DX10-only in UE3.
