Maybe I should clarify...for the average user, 4TB is overkill.
no to the "average" user 40 gigs is over kill.
if a user has all of there music ripped then 200 gigs is over kill
however if a person does any real work such as photos, video, audio
4T would / will / is very handyAnd this claim is grounded in what?
More then enough people have several gigs of music and or photos. Moreover, now that people are making and buying movies online, disk space vanishes quickly.
And with the upcoming popularity of integrated version tracking and backup software, 40gigs is going to be crippling.
The average user buys a computer composes a few documents and surfs the internet. Yes they may have a digital camera but 20 gigs worth of photos for a normal user ... I don't think so.

I think the problem with digital cameras is that people are taking a lot more bad pictures, and keeping them.

Very true. And with 7.1 MP cameras so cheap these days, the hard drive fills up fast!

The next version of Windows should suck up a good chunk of that space

Just regular photos and music will continue to take up a lot of space. I took 1.5GB worth of photos in just three days over the weekend.

Absolutly correct. Plus there will be new technologies coming out that we aren't aware of or using now that will come into play, plus programs will be much more complicated (meaning lots more code) and that's why the 'average' program will be much, much bigger than now. The funniest part is that the original article wasn't even focusing on large hard drives, they were talking about a new technology discovered that allowed for them
By the time 2011 comes around who knows what new technologies we'll be using, but whatever it is, it will seem 'normal' to most people.

Got something to back that up?
I don't have any hard data to back that up, but I sell computers where I work, and the vast majority of users that we sell to are lucky if they can get the internet working, let along backup a drive. Maybe it's just the people I know, but most don't back up their stuff, at least not to the point of two external drives and such.
As I said before, I agree that by 2011, when this 4TB drive (probably more by then) is out, it may be necessary. However, for those of us that use their computers recreationally and not for our jobs, it is overkill now. But, hey...who's to say overkill is bad. Heck, for the "average user" that we sell to at work, no one needs a quad core with 3 gigs of ram. Vista needs it more than the user does (we sell Macs too...but not many).
On the subject of digital cameras, it is my opinion that anything more than 7 or so mp is overkill (again, for the average person
). Especially in a pocket sized, point and shoot camera. The Sony W200 is a 12.1mp camera that is primarily meant as a point and shoot. The only use I can see for that many mega pixels is for print work or heavy duty, large scale photoshop stuff.

I agree. One of the courses I teach is an Intro to Computer Concepts and Applications and every semester when we get to the topic of backups I ask the students if they backup their files. Only about 5% even claim to perform backups.
I also agree about the megapixels, however that isn't stopping the camera manufacturers from making more models with crazy amounts of megapixels. The buyers don't have much of a choice if they want something in the 5 or 6 megapixel range. The reason that more megapixels isn't a great idea is that they stuff these extra megapixels on the same size sensor so you don't the sharpness and clarity can degrade as you go higher.

I actually like the Sony W200. It makes selling th W80 easy!!! It is the same camera (feature wise), with only 7mp instead of 12mp and costs less.....

Actually, it was more of a joke. You were talking about people not backing things up, and so I asked you if you had something to back that up
Regarding people and their backing up their hard drives, I think a lot more people do it today than in the past, especially with such inexpensive, good and easy programs around like SuperDuper.

We'll work our way up to Matrix-quality virtual reality.
That will take up more than 4TB.
