Upgrade Review...Finally
Well, I finally got my Mac how I want it..for now. After waiting for a few replacement Sonnet cards to come for the used one I bought off of eBay (warranty replacements), getting a monitor with DVI input and more money than I wanted to spend, my Mac is happy again.
Here's what I had and what I have:
Before...
Dual 500mhz G4 (7400), 1.25GB PC100 RAM, ATI Rage 6..
Now...
Dual 1.8ghz G4 (7447), 1.25GB PC100 RAM, Nvidia Geforce 6200
As a first hand test, everything is more responsive. OS X loads really quickly (and I thought it was relatively fast before..compared to Windows that is), and my shiny new 19'' LCD runs at 1440x900 without a problem. Now for the "hard" data....I tested with Cinebench, Xbench and Unreal 2004....
((I'm breaking it up into three seperate posts to make it easier to navigate))

It's interesting that my score actually went down with the Geforce6200 with the stock processor. I don't really know what to blam that on. Also, it becomes pretty apparent that my 100mhz bus/RAM is really limiting my score here...

Not much to say here. I'm thrilled with the results. The multiprocessor speedup went down a little, but oh well.

Re: Upgrade Review...Finally
Unreal 2004
Now for the more subjective test. All of the numbers below are based off of the command "stat fps" in Unreal. The "low" is the FPS I saw when all bots were present unleashing hell on me at the same time. The "average" is what I would consider to be the "normal" FPS throughout gameplay. The "high" is the peak FPS. Everything is based off of a deathmatch on Antalus with 4 bots.
The three quality levels are as follows: low, mid and high. Low is the lowest detail settings. Mid is the game's defautls. High is withe everything pegged and the options all turned on.
Resolutions are the same setup...low, medium and high. The "high" varies a little, as I switched monitors with my new video card (needed one with DVI). Low is 640x480. Mid is 1024x768. High is 1200x1600 on the tests with the Rage 6 and is 1280x1024 on the others.
Baseline (Stock everything)
Low Res
Low (detail) - 18-25 low - 35 avg - 50 high
Mid - 10-18 low - 25 avg - 33 high
High - 8-12 low - 18-22 avg - 30 high (spike to 50?)

*=Barely playable
**=Don't even think about playing
Well, after all of that typing...you can see that there has been a huge improvement. I can comfortably play Unreal with almost any graphics settings that I want. Granted, 20fps is kind of low, but 30 is definitely playable. Overall, I'm really happy with my results. Let me know what you guys think.
**EDIT**
I forgot to add this. Photoshop used to take about 31-33 seconds to load. Now it is 19 seconds. Illustrator was 31s and is now 21s. My total cost was as follows:
$360 for CPU (ebay) - Sonnet dual 1.8
$<100 for GPU (ebay) - Geforce 6200
$200 for monitor (store I work at) - Princeton 19'' widescreen LCD

Re: Upgrade Review...Finally
^^^Yay for eBay.
Too bad it took Sonnet three tries to get me one that didn't overheat. The first one (the one I got from eBay) was super glitchy and froze up. The second launched me into Open Firmware. The third is rock solid. I have to say, I am suprised that Sonnet replaced it for me, being that I bought it used.

Re: Upgrade Review...Finally
I guess it was decided that this would fit better in hardware hacking. I wasn't sure, as I didn't really hack anything. Oh well, now I know.

Nah this is the place. Probably won't get much interest in the general forums other than people who had no idea there was CPU upgrades.
Looks like it worked out. Think thats a 7447 tho. Sonnets so far hasn't taken the 48 plunge. Unless you got something special.

^^^^Thanks...didn't realize my typo there.
I'm pretty sure that the support guy at Sonnet liked me and all, but not enough to give me anything THAT special...

Yay upgrades!
Took you long enough to get it working.
Nice hardware.
