G3 iMac mouse problem
I'm trying to breathe a little life into my G3 iMac. I reformatted the HD and reinstalled OS 10.1. and all updates from Apple software update.
Now, when the computer boots up, everything seems to work fine, but the pointer won't move. I've tried different mice, and that doesn't work. I can highlight icons on the desktop by pressing keys, the the mouse don't work for nothin'
(I tried the mice on different computers, they work fine.)
I can't figure out what happened.
Any help?
Thanks!

That's just it, I can't get into anything.
I get the desktop. The pointer is in the upper left corner, and it won't move. I can highlight icons on the desktop by pressing the arrow keys, and...
Hmmm... What is the "OPEN" command? command+O?

Re: G3 iMac mouse problem
10.1 was a baddy. Did you ever have 10.1.3 or 4 or 5 on that ? What firmware upgrades if any have been done to that G3 ?
I'd upgrade the firmware and go directly to 10.2 or 10.3.
I've got a G3 iMac that is on semi-permanent loan to me that has 10.3 and its good.

Did the mouse work during the installation?
cursor keys and typing the file name will take care of selecting items. Command–downarrow and and command–uparrow will handle finder window navigation (open item for downarrow, uparrow just goes to the containing folder) and that's about it for FInder navigation.
Using the system preferences pane without a mouse would be, well, more or less impossible afaik.

Re: G3 iMac mouse problem
Well, I booted off the install disk, and the mouse worked. I went into disk utility and repaired the disk and permissions and then tried to restart and got a kernel panic.
I've tried to reboot a couple of times now and it freezes at the gray Apple logo.
I dunno. I've thought for a long time that I wanted to change out the HD, but I want to make sure the rest of the system is up to it before I spend, like $40 on it.

Did you skip the disc CRC check during the installation? Make sure the disc is good.

No, I didn't skip it. The disk is good.
I'll try to play with it some more this weekend if I have time. I'll get back to you.
