A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
I saw this on MacDailyNews yesterday, this is however not a qoute from them:
Today, aprox. 13 hours from the time of this post, a new piece of imageediting wonder is released as a public beta and it's Leopard only. The program is called Naked light and according to the website it uses a nondestructive workflow. That means no more saves between changes and no more starting all over again when one forgets to do that.
Editing is done by combining buildingblocks, called nodes, where each block could be either a filter, a brushstroke or whatever so if you regret a change then the only thing you have to do is to remove that node.
The program is also pixel-free (infinite resolution) which the developers explain like this:
When Naked light needs to draw to your screen or export, it automatically and precisely resizes everything on your canvas, in real time, as needed.

I'd definately try this one out if I'd upgraded to Leopard. I'm still waiting for Apple to release at least one update before I move from Tiger to Leopard.

Looks interesting. hopefully they won't build it on a single window interface so you feel like you are working on an image by peering at it through a keyhole.

Oh that site made my DAY! I've never been on a site that said my browser was inadequate and that I should use Safari or FireFox instead!
And yes I'm using I.E. 7

Re: A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
It's really just an app that takes advantage of the new non-destructive image processing in Leopard.
That said, this "infinite resolution" thing sounds kind of retarded. Like it or not, displays and printers have a PPI and DPI, and designers need to be able to control that stuff.

Well I guess it works well in theory and especially in the program. Printing and a monitor that can show it in a fair way might be another story as you say. But I guess the idea is that you shouldn't have to edit every part you want to put into the final composition. I'm no editing pro though, just a sucker for cool gui's that in a best case scenario works. It's not cool if it doesn't work.

I've yet to try this demo out, so I really don't know what they hell they're talking about.
Yet, having control over DPI is pretty damn critical. Sure, zooming everything, including low-res source material, is easier... but it produces crap.

Re: A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
Jebus, this thing is HORRIBLE.
I can't even get an image to load properly. Moreover, the composition window is not movable or closable. And the tool bar? Magnification and stacks? Are you smurfing kidding me?
Perhaps these folks (kids?) should've spend more time developing something that works, not a fancy website and blog for something that is a long looooong way from anything titled "public beta."

Re: A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
Reading this makes me wonder why they didn't postponed the release another month or so so that they could fix the worst problems.
WARNING: THIS BETA RELEASE
IS FOR THE ADVENTUROUS AND
BRAVE OF HEART ONLY
Seriously, most users should wait until the next beta release...
It's not a big app though, only 1.2MB. I guess it just works as as framework for many of the flashy builtin functions in Leopard. I wonder how much they want for it when it's finished.

Isn't the idea that you can build it out to the res you need? That's why I mentioned Live Picture. That's how you output from it.
Of course you have to have enough pixels going in.

Re: A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
Can someone tell me how you're supposed to add a node to the very end of your workflow? I mean like in between the node that connects to your image and the image itself. My friend refuses to figure out how on the grounds that the app is too crappy.
I'm really confused about why the developer chose a rigid tile-based way to manage your workflow instead of using floating nodes that can be placed anywhere in the workspace, then connect the nodes using wires. The current design is insanely rigid and artificially limits what you can do with the app.

With my best friend at my side,
I face the new day in full stride.
I don't know what the future holds,
But I'll be waiting, proud and bold.

Re: A tip for Leopards: Naked Light is released today
From messing with it an admittedly very short time, I have to wonder what it is supposed to do at all. It does not appear capable of even opening anything at all seeing as how the "open" command in the file menu is grayed out.
The wannabe "stacks" menus that pop out from the side are frighteningly horrible in both concept and execution. Talk about taking a bad idea and misapplying it in an entirely inappropriate other context. Just what every UI needs. Menus that pop out from the side, in a smurfing arc. Gagh!!

This seriously sounds like a ui slapped on core animation and not much else.
