iTunes file weirdness: Icons wrong, iTunes can't locate
Greetings,
I just pulled my iTunes library from an external hard drive to the internal drive on my new iMac (with Leopard, natch). A significant percentage (15-20%) of the song files show the standard MP3 song icon when viewed in the finder. The rest show the album art. The files with the standard icon (for purposes of this post, let's call them "ugly files") are randomly distributed, as far as I can tell. Most albums have 2-3 such ugly files.
Not something I would have even noticed, except for the associated iTunes weirdness. All of the "ugly files" can't be located by iTunes. In other words, their metadata shows up in the Music Library. But, when I go to play one of them (or get info on one of them), iTunes responds with:
The song "yadda, yadda" could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?
I can easily find the song files, as they are in the same directory as the rest of the album. But doing so for 4000 songs will drive me batty.
Anyone seen something like this? Know how to fix it? Know of an automated way to "locate" the lost files?
Thanks,
yendi
Thanks very much,
Bill

Re: iTunes file weirdness: Icons wrong, iTunes can't locate
Go to the folder where they are located (By album), select all the songs and double click. That should put all in the iTunes library and the top song in the list should start playing.
This is faster than one song at a time, yet still not ideal.
Anyone else?

Re: iTunes file weirdness: Icons wrong, iTunes can't locate
You shouldn't ever need to touch the files. If you want to move the library just choose the new location in iTunes prefs and then choose consolidate library. You can readd all the files as caoimhin mentioned or by just dragging the whole folder onto the itunes window but you're going to end up with a crapload of duplicateds. Best bet now is probably to start from scratch. You'll lose your playlists and playcounts but it's plenty easy. Select everything in itunes and delete. Do NOT move to trash. Be sure the new library is chosen in the prefs and be sure "Copy to iTunes music folder" is not checked, then just drag the whole music folder onto the iTunes window.
