What had just happened to my G4 Mac?

I have a G4 MDD 1.25 ghz with 10.2.8 and I usually put it to sleep when I'm not using it. Tonight when I got home my Mac was powered off. When I tried to power on it doesn't want to turn on.  After pushing the power button several times with no result I opened the case and not knowing what to do I decided to touched the power supply casing and tried to removed the internal battery without success. I then decided to press the power button one more time and the power came on. What's going on? Could it be that the internal battery is getting weak? Will a weak battery cause a computer to not power on? I appreciate any input that you guys can give. Thanks.

Sounds like your power supply had a bad connection.  I would imagine the action of hinging open the case managed to reconnect it.

Is there a way for me to avoid that from happening again?

I'd open up the case and reseat the connections to and from the power supply, and also use a can of compressed air to blast out any dust that may have accumulated.
