Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
So, I've got this GeForce 5200 Ultra laying around. I've got a few older G4 towers sitting around as well, is it possible to just cut off the ends of the agp pro connector and put it in a 4x agp slot, or is that too much for the card?

You may not have to cut. Look at this:

Based on the findings of the report, my conclusion was that this idea was not a practical deterrent for reasons which at this moment must be all too obvious.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
Thanks for the info, but the card I had looked like this:
And, because I'm so impatient I just cut the ends off. The good news is that it works great in my quicksilver, the bad news is that it no longer works in my G5. It's not really bad news for me, but it is (obviously) and irreversable process.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
ouch, another problem you may find will be that the card also used those pins you cut off, so it will now not be able to run at its full pontental in the g4. truth is that i'm suprised that it even worked, as agp and agp pro are different and not suppost to be interchangable at all, hence the different pins.

Really? I thought the agp and the agp pro connectors were pretty much the same, sans some extra power and some extra bandwidth. At any rate, it seems to be working fine. I've got it running 10.4 server at the moment, so it's not really doing anything to stress the video card. The only issue I've noticed is that the analog (at least when using a DVI to VGA adapter) signal seems pretty noisy. Using the ADC port yields a nice, crisp image though.

The main point I was getting at, was that all you needed to do was put tape on the parts you're trying to disable, instead of breaking them off!

Re: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
Well as long as it works, tho a straight cut off like that is dangerous unless you seal it. Sounds like its working for you tho so by all means get the most out of it.
I wouldn't recommend doing something like that again. Impatience is usually something you don't want when hardmodding/etc. Thats when mistakes tend to happen and problems arise. I already had that happen to me once on a G4 CPU when I tried to volt boost it.

One of those "it seemed like a damn good idea at the time" situations. I've had my fair share of those...both with cars and computers.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
Just to clarify, I wasn't just trying to disable a few pins. The connector wouldn't physically fit into the G4's agp slot. I'm not saying that justifies my haste, but still, it wasn't a matter that tape would solve. Well, not tape alone. I did have to tape pins 3 and 11 to get it to work into the 4x agp slot.
The red circles are the parts of the card I cut off. I didn't do any sealing besides covering those parts with electrical tape. I guess we'll see what happens there.

Re: Nvidia Geforce 5200 Ultra
Electrical tape should be fine. There are other tapes which are better for sealing but I wouldn't waste the $$$ on em unless it was obvious that there was a problem.
