EVE Online: Trinity Launching Dec. 5
This press release announces that EVE Online: Trinity, the latest free expansion pack for CCP' s space based MMO game, will be released for their subscribers on Dec. 5. While there will be a classic version of the expansion a premimum version with enhanced graphics will also be released for free on that date that will include support for Shader 3.0 graphics.
The release of the Trinity expansion fortifies EVE Online’s position at the forefront of three-dimensional game graphics, creating a breath-taking cinematic experience during actual gameplay. In order to achieve its visual goals, CCP developed a new graphics engine, architected for Shader Model 3.0 and above. In this first showcase for the new engine, all ships, stations and stargates have been reconstructed. EVE Online: Trinity employs advanced lighting techniques and complex surface materials to make these highly detailed models even more realistic.
SM3.0 graphics means it's time for dv to upgrade his videocard. There's no overkill in compy power, esp. graphics.

Damn, for DX10 I'll need Vista, too, right?
And a RAM upgrade...
And just when I had saved enough to buy a bed...
Anybody wanna buy a PCI-E 7900GS w/ dual DVI out?

It just said SM3.0, which does work with DX9, and your 7900GS, so there may be hope yet!

Re: EVE Online: Trinity Launching Dec. 5
Forgot about the 7900. Roughly it's DX9.0c up to SM3.0, DX10 SM4.0, DX10.1 SM4.1. Need an HD 38xx for SM4.1 at this point, but at this point it's academic.
Guessing 7900 GS OK at your panel's 1280x1024. Sleep is good... you've learned gaming while sleeping, right?

I run dual panels. Thinking of getting a splitter and moving to a triple setup (already own the identical panels, they're just spread around to different computers atm.)
Gaming while sleeping is hard. Mining works okay though - I sleep for 180 seconds, transfer the ore to the cargo ship, then sleep for another 180 seconds.
But I have to do that sitting in the chair, not lying on the bed I don't own yet.

Shame Blizzard probably won't do something like this for WoW. Would be nice to see that in SM3. Altho if TBC was any indication of increasing hardware demands, LK is gonna push things more.

With EVO out for Mac (it is now, right?), and WoW OSX since day one, it'll be interesting seeing what comes out when, and what features are supported. I've not heard anything definitive about 10.5's supposedly improved OpenGL's impact on games, if any. That's never been a high priority in Cupertino.

EVE is in beta testing for OS X on Intel hardware - same way the EA ports work, I guess. It's reportedly kinda sluggish compared to Windows on the same machine. Official release is, iirc, with the Trinity release.
Which I'm really not looking forward too, ssince my Eos got hit by the nerfbat. Hard. In the face

Re: EVE Online: Trinity Launching Dec. 5
Uh oh.
Eve Online update FUBARs gamers' PCs
Bye bye, boot.ini, bye bye
...
EVE ONLINE, "the world's largest game universe", seems to have released a "premium" update that's done a pretty fair job of tiggering a lot of its members' PC systems.
It's hard to figure out exactly what's happening, but forum posts report that the update is either deleting the Windows boot.ini file or replacing it with the Eve Online boot.ini file. There's also a report of a Windows "dll" file gone missing.
Even as we write this, many Eve Online members are struggling to recover their Windows installations from the consequences of what at the moment appears to be the game vendor's monumental screwup.
If you can stand small white text on dark backgrounds, there's more about all this here and here. µ

Impossible to port.
No wonder the game devs been having a tough time porting.

EVE Online Trinity-Windows XP Isssues
The official EVE Online website has confirmed that the new Trinity expansion client had a major issue with Windows XP. A number of people who updated the game from Classic to Premium have had their boot.ini file deleted so they can't reboot their systems (Vista users are not affected). The post has some workarounds for those players who were unfortunate enough to have this issue. The web site has now removed this update so people who haven't downloaded this expansion won't have this issue.

Re: EVE Online: Trinity Launching Dec. 5
Could've used more testing, yeah.
EVE ONLINERS will be pleased to know the Trinity update won't now duff up their systems.
Icelandic Eve developer CCP confessed becoming aware of an "issue" shortly after the deployment of the update. "A small percentage of our users may have been affected and now need to make repairs to system files, " it said in a statement.
A new build is now available and is safe for all users to download and install.

The statement continues: "Users who are running Microsoft Windows versions other than Vista, with multiple hard drives (or multiple partitions on any hard drive) and began downloading the Premium graphics content before 04:00 GMT on Wednesday, December 6, should visit this link and follow the instructions given to correct any potential system issues."
This has been a public service announcement. µ

Re: EVE Online: Trinity Launching Dec. 5
Every update has problems. This is the biggest, though. (Biggest update, biggest problem.)
My guild leader and I speculate that CCP created a good game largely by accident.
