Playstation 3 and Airport Express
Howdy folks!
First off I apologize if this is in the wrong place, but I'm having a hell of a time trying to get my roomate's Playstation 3 to play nice with our airport express. He just bought the 60 GB model, so it does have built in wifi. For the life of me I can't figure out what the settings should be. It can hook up to the WPA2 settings I have selected (TKIP), and during the test confirms that it grabs an IP address, but fails the connection test. At that point I'm totally in the dark. Here's what I've found online:
1) It might be that we need to update the OS. I'm told there's a way to do that without connecting to the internet but I'll be damned if I know what that is. Our version is 1.0 and the current is something like 2.0.
2) Some people had problems with not having distributed a MAC address. I don't have that setting turned on so that isn't a problem.
3) Connecting via ethernet isn't an option. Our school turns a blind eye to people who get around their security by using their own wireless routers but will not let you hook up through ethernet.
4) We had the same problem when I turned the airport to WEP.
5) This is the closest I got to finding a solution online off of the apple discussion forum:
I'm not sure how to disable the MAC address control, but I did fix the problem.
1. Created Wired Connection (PS3-to-DSL).
2. Wrote down the primary DNS server address it used.
3. Used the PS3 Network Settings as usual to set it up for Wireless Connection, choosing the Airport and such, but then chose Custom and manually specified an IP address (for my network), subnet mask (255.255.255.0), router (10.0.1.1 = Airport), and DNS server (plugged in address obtained in Step 2).
Works like a champ now!
I tried to copy this but it didn't like me using the router address as 10.0.1.1. That's ignoring the fact that there's no way for me to tether it.
Has anybody faced this problem before? I'm a total babe in the woods when it comes to networking. Any help is much appreciated!
EDIT: I have since tried something different: plugging my computer in to the ethernet, copying down all the information, and manually setting that to the PS3. This is what some other folks have done with their XBOX 360s. The problem is that you can apparently change the MAC address with a 360, and you can't with a PS3. I tried enabling access control on the Airport Express and adding the PS3 but that didn't work either.
*sigh* EDIT: Even later on I tried sharing the internet connection through the ethernet port on my MBP in almost the same manner described by this fellow for his Wii. Still no dice.

Re: Playstation 3 and Airport Express
Most definitely. One of our two ethernet jacks is connected to an AirPort Express through which we both connect.

Re: Playstation 3 and Airport Express
Need some more info to help.
What IP address does the PS3 get from the AirPort Express?
What is the IP address of the AirPort Express?
Have you tried removing all security (WEP, WPA, etc.)?

Re: Playstation 3 and Airport Express
Removing the security didn't make a difference. I don't know much about this but I figure since with these settings the PS3 has been getting an IP address the problem isn't connecting to the airport but rather getting the internet through it.
I take it from the below information that the IP address of my airport is 10.0.1.1 since that's what it's calling the IP address of the router. The IP I get when checking with Google on this computer is 132.161.221.120.
Here are the steps to setup the wireless connection. Brackets denote the choices I didn't make.
1) WLAN Settings: Scan, select SSID 4330, Security WPA-PSK(TKIP)
2) SSID: 4330
3) WLAN Security Setting: WPA-PSK(TKIP) [None, WEP, WPA-PSK(AES)]
4) WPA Key: Network's Password
5) Address Settings: Easy
These are the settings chosen automatically by the 'easy' setting:
IP Address: 10.0.1.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Default Router: 10.0.1.1
Primary/Secondary DNS: 10.0.1.1, 0.0.0.0
MTU: Automatic
Proxy Server: Do Not Use
UPnP: Enabled
With these settings the connection test succeeds in getting an IP address but fails when checking the internet connection. Hope that helps!

Re: Playstation 3 and Airport Express
I have just one word of advice...Port Forwarding.
In the AirPort Express, setup Port Forwarding on the port that the PS3 uses (needs). Look in your PS3 documentation. This enables a direct connection through the router (AirPort Express) to the PS3.
Port Forwarding is in the Advanced section of AirPort Setup Utility or whatever the utility is called now.
I really hope this helps.
Really.

Re: Playstation 3 and Airport Express
Thanks for the help, but for some reason totally unapparent to me it just started working. Wish I knew what that reason was...
Oh well!
